Our Aquatic Safety Patrollers work on foot and by boat to patrol the Buntzen Lake Public Use Management Area. Their main task is to inform the public of the rules and regulations regarding water safety. They communicate closely with other staff including lifeguards and remain highly vigilant throughout their shift. They respond to incidents, both on and off the water. In addition, aquatic safety staff conduct maintenance, patrol our picnic area, clean washrooms, and assist in many aspects that contribute to the day-to-day operations of our park.

**Responsibilities**:

- Driving and maintaining a 60HP Boston Whaler patrol boat
- Patrolling the lake to ensure the public are safe, wearing life jackets, and following water safety rules
- Patrolling the beach to ensure the public are safe, aware of aquatic hazards, and following water safety rules
- Daily cleaning of washroom facilities
- Communicating closely with other patrol staff, including lifeguards, to monitor the water as a team
- Keeping detailed written records of water patrols, user counts, daily checklists, etc.
- Responding to aquatic incidents, water rescues, capsized vessels, emergency extraction, etc.
- Responding to fire emergencies from the boat and on land - including setting up the sprinkler system
- Patrolling the picnic area to ensure the public are safe and following area rules and regulations
- Patrolling with members of the RCMP on weekend days and holidays, on foot or on the boat to enforce park rules and regulations
- Picking up litter and debris throughout the park
- Landscaping and vegetation maintenance
- Cleaning picnic tables, garbage bins and performing other maintenance tasks
- This is NOT a life guarding position - Aquatic Safety Patrollers do not swim when responding to incidents

**Applicant Requirements**:

- Has PCOC or willingness to obtain before start date
- Valid class 5 BC Driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
- Experienced driving a boat or other watercraft and/or other experience in aquatic recreation or safety
- Willingness to learn new skills and grow as a worker
- Able to work within a team
- Able to enforce rules in an effective and professional manner
- Strong verbal skills and ability to maintain a friendly demeanor during public interactions
- Mature, professional attitude with the ability to take instructions and receive extensive detailed training
- Self-motivated and able to stay focused and on-task when not directly supervised
- Available to work 8-hour shifts between 7am - 10pm and work over-time in emergency situations
- Good physical fitness; can walk or stand for prolonged periods of time and lift heavy objects
- Capable of swimming to safety in unlikely event of water immersion
- Will work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extended boat patrols on hot days
- Steel toed boots are required if hired

**Preference will be given to applicants who are**:

- Has a Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC)
- Previously worked / volunteered driving a boat or otherwise have relevant boating experience
- Mechanical or repair experience
- Experienced in lifeguarding and/or patrol
- Experienced in enforcement, conflict resolution, or violence prevention
- Experienced in firefighting or have taken S-100 fire suppression course or higher
- Qualified or experienced in first aid / emergency response
- Experienced in customer service / working with the public

**Schedule**:This is a seasonal position.

Training / part-time: May 1 - May 12: 8-16 hrs / wk

Summer Schedule: May 15 - Sep 4: 32-40 hrs / wk

On-call, and additional hours are often available over the summer and sometimes into the fall.

All applicants must be available to work May 1-12 and all weekends from May 15 - September 4.

This position will be given first consideration for employment in the winter based on performance & shift availability.
