**Position Summary**

The Better at Home Program is designed to provide support to elders within the Stó:lō territory who need additional assistance to continue to reside at home in their community. The Labourer plays a key role in the Better at Home Program, providing leg work to support the clients. Labourers can expect to perform a very wide variety of tasks tdo support a wide variety of clients. Assigned responsibilities will include indoor and outdoor activities, including working in high and low temperatures, and inclement weather (rain, snow etc.).

**What you’ll do**
- Provide support to community elders, and other clients as assigned.
- Operate hand tools, small power tools, and landscaping tools such as lawnmowers and brush cutters.
- Perform regular, seasonal, or large-scale landscaping to the exterior of client homes.
- Mow grass, pull weeds, power wash, and other related or similar tasks.
- Clean eaves troughs/gutters as required.
- Ensuring entranceways and sidewalks to elders’ homes are safe and accessible.
- Build and maintain good relationships with clients.
- Engaging with Elders to ensure a safe home by listening to requests, providing safety insights, and completing referrals as needed.
- Maintaining adequate amounts of firewood for elders’ homes, by means of chopping, stacking, and sourcing as needed.
- Liaising with families, community members and other supports to ensure safe and healthy living for clients.
- Flexibility to prioritize tasks as requested by the clients taking into account the season and schedule.

**Other Duties**
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Manager, Director, Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.

**What you bring**

**Qualifications**
- Formal education or training in Maintenance, yard work or a related field preferred. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and to work under pressure.
- High professional and ethical standards.
- Awareness of safety procedures for using power equipment.
- Physically fit and able to perform all the physical requirements of the position.
- Willingness to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions
- Good communication and relationship-building skills.

**Preferred**:

- Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
- Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

**Cultural Competency**:

- Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities

**Working/Special Conditions**:

- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives
