**Department Information**:
The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

**Job Information**:
The Relief Corrections Officer supervises incarcerated persons in accordance with operational standards established in the NWT Corrections Division, in order to provide safe and secure custody, rehabilitation of persons in custody and to facilitate their reintegration into their communities. As part of the facility operations team the incumbent will ensure the ongoing provision and enforcement of policy and services in accordance with the Corrections Mission, Vision, and Value statement.

The ability to act appropriately during crisis/stressful situations, with problem solving and decision-making skills are essential for this position. The incumbent is to have knowledge of practical corrections techniques and theories with the ability to exercise sound judgement. The ability to work in cross cultural environments is essential for this position.

- Acceptable hearing acuity
- Acceptable ability to speak clearly, loudly and quickly
- Acceptable mobility, strength, endurance and balance
- Acceptable visual acuity
- Acceptable ability to distinguish odours
- Class 5 Drivers Licence with the ability to obtain a Class 4 Drivers Licence within three (3) months of hire
- Valid First Aid and CPR, or the ability to obtain it within three (3) months of hire

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

- One year post-secondary Certificate in a Social Science related field with 6 months of related Corrections experience
- Two (2) years Corrections experience
- Completion of the NWT Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program or an equivalent programs from another jurisdiction.
