**Main Purpose & Function**

This position is responsible for developing and implementing transportation and public realm projects in street rights-of-way, including for implementation of community plans, and contributing to public space and transportation policy development.

**Key Contacts & Reporting Relationships**

The Transportation Planner II reports directly to Senior Transportation Engineer in Community Transportation, and will work closely with multidisciplinary planners, engineers, communications, special events and technical staff and various internal and external stakeholders.

**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
- Manages multiple, complex projects, including developing project terms of reference, scope and budget.
- Liaises with other city staff including staff in Transportation, Public Space and Street Use, Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability, Park and Recreation, Real Estate and Facilities Management and Arts, Culture and Community Services
- Designs assessment criteria and success factors, evaluates outcomes of public space programs and inform policy development. Develops study parameters, conducts research and surveys, analyzes results, write reports, and formulates policy recommendations.
- Represents Transportation’s interests and priorities on inter-departmental working groups for the development community plans, official development plans, large-site redevelopments, rezonings and other city-wide planning initiatives.
- Designs and conducts public engagement and consultation with stakeholders and other departments and agencies
- Chairs meetings and attends City Council meetings, and other civic and outside meetings (may include weekday evenings and weekends)
- Coordinates project communication channels internally and externally (web, written etc.)
- Supervises junior branch/technical/professional staff, provides direction to various project team members and oversees consultant teams
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

**Qualifications**

Education and Experience:

- A University degree in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture or a related field and a minimum of two years’ experience in the planning field, preferably supplemented by supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and experience.
- Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Considerable knowledge of best practices in transportation planning and design, and public space design, programming and stewardship.
- Considerable knowledge of current Canadian and international guidelines pertinent to active transportation
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage staff
- Strong analytical skills and ability to anticipate and manage multiple interacting and technically complex issues
- Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills
- Strong conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation skills
- Ability to formulate sound judgement and ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Ability to make decisions, to negotiate and to problem solve
- Ability to work in interdisciplinary project teams, evaluate proposals and make strategic recommendations
- Ability to engage with the public and work with community groups
- Ability to develop interpersonal and communication skills and ability to communicate ideas effectively
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and work diplomatically with community groups, professional personnel and effected officials
- Ability to work on multiple program objectives within defined timelines and manage complex projects, budgets, staff and consultant teams
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and tact
