**Hours**: 37.5 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday however hours will vary significantly including very early mornings to late evenings to accommodate the tides.

Rate of Pay: Summer Crew Technician’s $19.00/hour, Summer Crew Lead Technician $21.00/hour

**BC Conservation Foundation** is looking to hire Restoration Technicians for a 16 week project to work with the BC Spartina Working Group; a multi-agency partnership that works to manage and control invasive spartina species in British Columbia. The total number of positions is dependent on funding. The technicians will work under the direction of Ducks Unlimited staff to carry out field work related to invasive species control. Focus will be on control methods for this invasive grass in the intertidal mudflats of Boundary Bay and Robert’s Bank and salt marshes in the Burrard Inlet area. This work will be physically challenging and labour-intensive but will provide valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities for any student wishing to pursue a career in the environmental field. You will gain experience in the marine environment including working around the tides, shorebird/plant identification and research methodologies.

**Responsibilities**:

- Mapping of spartina plants using smart devices including ESRI software and GPS devices.
- Identification and manual removal of invasive _Spartina _spp. in the Lower Mainland of BC.
- Assist with mapping and data collection for proposed herbicide treatment.
- Monitoring/research of spartina control and restoration.
- Leading volunteers and outreach to general public.
- Record keeping of daily activities and reporting on project completion.

**Minimum Qualifications/Requirements**:

- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Be available for the entire term
- Complete a criminal record check
- Technicians are required to provide their own personal outdoor work gear for working in a wet and muddy environment. This includes items such as: work boots, rain gear and sun protection. Any protective safety gear required for the tasks will be provided.
- Due to the nature of this work, the technicians must be physically fit and able to do physical work all day long including digging and lifting approximately 30lbs. The working environment of the mudflats is demanding on the body, especially on the joints of the knee and ankle.
- Competent working with tablets and computers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working in the outdoors, in adverse weather and environmental conditions
- Competent navigating through complex terrain
- Ability to work independently, in a team, and remotely
- Applicants **must** meet the Canada Summer Job criteria as follows - be a Canadian citizen between the ages of 15 and 30 years old. These criteria are set by the funding source for the project and therefore we cannot hire anyone that does not meet the eligibility criteria.

**Preferred Qualifications and Skills**:

- Ability to identify native and invasive salt marsh plant species.
- Previous experience working outdoors in all weather conditions (either volunteer or paid)
- WorkSafeBC Level 1 First Aid
- Valid BC Driver’s License
- WHMIS Certificate
- Industrial and Noxious Weed Vegetation Management Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate
- Pursuing a post-secondary degree or diploma in the natural sciences, ideally working towards a degree in natural resource conservation, habitat restoration, ecology, and/or invasive species management.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment with a high attention to detail.
