Black Creek Community Farm is an 8-acre farm in the heart of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood in Toronto. We are a not-for-profit organization and leader in Toronto’s dynamic urban agriculture and community food sector. At Black Creek Community Farm, we serve and enrich our community through a thriving farm, healthy food, and hands-on training and learning experiences. We work with schools, organizations, and agencies to deliver mentoring and employment opportunities for Black youth and other equity-seeking groups in the community.
Our focus is to inspire the next generation by providing leadership in food justice and supporting diverse natural and social ecosystems. We believe everyone has a right to food. We are equity-oriented and believe in directing adequate resources to people who are experiencing systemic oppression and social inequity as it relates to food security. We believe the Black community, low-income communities, and other equity-seeking groups must play a central role in defining food justice and its priorities. We believe in prioritizing lived experiences in addressing food insecurity.
**Main Tasks**:
The Farm Park Educator is responsible for supporting the implementation of the day-to-day operations of the BCCF Farm Park, which includes the maintenance and development of the food forest, trails, and gardens (including the Welcome Garden, outdoor classroom, and 3 sisters, pollinator, and medicine wheel gardens), the chicken coop, Wiigiwaam, outdoor oven, and community plots. They will support the development and implementation of intergenerational education rooted in land and food justice. This will include planning and facilitating land-based volunteer sessions, workshops and events for community members and leading work for groups of all ages. They will assist in Farm Park reporting and outreach activities. Broadly, this position works closely with the Programs Manager and Farm Park Coordinator towards the goal of land-care and site maintenance through the provision of community programming in the context of the mission of BCCF.
All duties will follow COVID-19 safety protocols.
**Duties include (but are not limited to)**: Farm Maintenance
- Support the establishment and maintenance of trails, the food forest, chicken coop, and garden spaces, including planting, direct seeding, mulching, weeding, irrigating, tree care, pruning, weed-whacking, mowing, and harvesting
- Support general site maintenance, including litter pick-up, garbage disposal, and infrastructure repair
- Conduct regular tool and machinery inventory and maintenance (brush cutters, lawnmowers, farm/garden tools, etc.)
- Complete the seasonal, weekly, and daily “to do” task lists
- Implement land and site management plans for Farm Park spaces as communicated/directed by Fark Park Coordinator
- Support the maintenance of community plots and assist members with related administrative tasks such as receiving payment, communication and troubleshooting
- Greet and/or welcome guests who visit Black Creek Community Farm, answer general inquiries, and direct visitors to other staff, as appropriate.
- Ensure the farm space is safe and accessible for staff, volunteers, and visitors
- Attend and participate in Farm Park team meetings, staff training, and staff meetings
- Collaborate with other staff, interns, and volunteers as needed
- Support Market Garden and Farm Education teams as needed throughout the season
Facilitation
- Lead and/or co-facilitate the engagement of volunteer, community, and corporate groups in Farm Park spaces
- Lead and/or co-facilitate educational and hands-on activities for seniors, children, youth, and other resident groups
- Collaborate with Farm Park Coordinator on the design of workshops, training and programs
- Implement programming to animate the various growing and teaching spaces at Black Creek Community Farm
- Support in providing training and mentorship for the Farm Park training and volunteer programs
- Complete routine safety checks on tools and resources in advance of Farm Park programs for volunteers and groups
- Collaborate with staff to support corporate, community, and fundraising events
Reporting and Evaluation
- Document plant purchasing, inventory, and other metrics related to Farm Park using Google Suite or similar software
- Document workshops delivered and other metrics with up-to-date records in Program Log using Google Suite or similar software, take photos during programming, and record participant feedback
- Assist the Farm Park Coordinator with the Farm Park Annual Report and other funding-related reports
Outreach
- Support Farm Park Coordinator in outreach activities to engage community residents including creating promotional material, canvassing, flyering, and tabling at community events
