**Basic Function**: Reporting to the Supervisor of Projects & Exhibit Design, this position is responsible as part of a design and fabrication team, for exhibit design, construction, and installation in the Exhibit Design Unit. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

**Responsibilities**:

- Perform Zoo exhibit fabrication and repairs consistent with reviewed and approved exhibit development and production schedules.
- Fabricate, sculpt, or mould exhibit items using various materials such as: Steel, wood, cement, and fiberglass.
- Painting of artificial trees & rocks, signs, murals, and exhibit features as required.
- As directed, prepares design sketches, drawings, artwork, renderings, and scale models for accurate exhibit work to be constructed consistent with reviewed and approved exhibit and site interpretation projects.
- Provides guidance and direction to non-permanent staff and co-op students, assigned to the Exhibit Design Unit, in the absence of the Supervisor & Exhibit Design Technician Grade 2.
- Assists in estimating costs & schedule of project related work and advise Supervisor & Exhibit Design Technician Grade 2 as required.
- Ensures that all Unit materials, tools and equipment are stored in good condition and reports any defects.
- May be required to carry and use a two-way radio.
- Follows all branch instructions.
- Perform all duties in compliance with municipal, provincial, and federal requirements and by the standards set by the Toronto Zoo.
- Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.
- Reports to supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.
- Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to supervisor immediately.
- Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health & Safety, WHMIS and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.
- Keeps current on trends and best practices - materials, methods, technology, equipment, etc.
- Attends appropriate training courses as required.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.

**Qualifications**:

- Graduate of a recognized post-secondary institution in art, design, graphics, or in a related field or the equivalent training and experience.
- Must have two (2) years related experience.
- Experience in Exhibit Design & Production would be considered an asset.
- Experience with design/art software would be considered an asset.
- Must be able to deal with other Zoo staff and business contacts in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally, visually and in writing.
- Must be able to handle the physical and climactic demands of the position, including regularly and safely lifting and carrying heavy items, including the ability to lift 25 kg (55 lbs).
- Must possess unrestricted Class G driver's license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of the materials and methods of fabrication required to produce quality exhibits and signage, complementary to the Zoo's collection.
- Experience using the materials and methods of fabrication required to produce quality exhibits and signage, complementary to the Zoo's collection would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge and experience in construction or fabrication, experience using a variety of basic power and hand tools, equipment, construction materials and techniques for exhibit production would be considered an asset.
- Must have knowledge of construction terms and procedures.
- Knowledge of sign production techniques is an asset.
- Must have working knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Information System (WHMIS) legislation, Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Toronto Zoo Safety Policy.
