**Reports To**: Shelter Manager
**Job Summary**
The Janitor/Custodian, under the direction of the Shelter manager, will primarily be responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy working environment for all areas of the shelter facility. Practicing strong attention to detail, effective time management skills the cleaner/janitor will adhere to safe work practices at all times. Working with a vulnerable population, this role will respect and protect the rights of clients.

**Job Duties**
- Adhere to all appropriate workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, accommodation standards, and company policies and procedures
- Protect the health and safety of others by adopting safe work practices and reporting unsafe conditions immediately
- Maintain the cleanliness and order of the facility, stocking and supplying designated facility areas (sweeping, mopping, cleaning) laundry services, showers, washrooms, and mats
- Carry out heavy cleaning tasks and special projects
- Perform regular property inspections including washrooms, common areas, building exterior each day at specified times
- Ensure commitment to quality, client and guest safety, and risk management initiatives
- Notify management of occurring deficiencies and need for repairs
**Job Requirements**
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 2 years prior experience
- WHMIS training
- Valid first aid or CPR certification
- Clean vulnerable sector check
- Strong working knowledge of safe cleaning industry principles, methods, practices and techniques
- Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with a wide range of people of different ages and cultures, in potentially emotionally charged situations
- Ability to maintain positive professional boundaries without imposing personal judgments and expectations
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
