GENERAL STATEMENT

Under the general direction of the Capital Projects Manager(s) and in consultation with the Director, Campus Planning & Capital Projects and other managers, the Space Planner assists in the development and maintenance of record drawings and databases to support the overall management and planning of college space. This position also maintains the College’s furniture inventory and implements furniture moves, adds, and changes as assigned. The space planner conducts research and completes a variety of related activities in support of the capital projects team.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Space Planning Records Management & Analytics
- Tracks and reports space use, liaising with the Office of the Registrar departments Institutional Research and Data Management/Systems & Scheduling;
- Updates and maintains existing site, utilities, building drawings, standards manuals and project records in both print and electronic forms;
- Makes recommendations to improve space utilization and/or space condition;
- Collects space utilization and existing condition information relative to current planning initiatives;
- Projects space needs, develops analytical space use studies for departments, schools, and divisions, coordinates space programming and space planning;
- Participates in and supports the development of goals and metrics for achieving space management objectives set by college leadership;
- Helps maintain campus-approved architectural and design guidelines and standards and oversees as applicable conformance with those standards;
Space Planning and Design
- Recommends potential layouts, furniture and fixtures, finishes, etc.; and coordinates minor refurbishment and furniture projects; completes test-fits as applicable;
- Conducts and compiles research for planning initiatives, as directed by supervisor;
- Advises on building and fire code requirements as they relate to space planning and use;
- Creates visual communication and other materials to support and communicate projects and other planning initiatives (such as floor plans and/or renderings);
Furniture Moves, Adds & Changes
- Assists user groups on small finish upgrades and furniture requests or respond to furniture or finish-related inquiries;
- Coordinates minor refurbishment and furniture projects;
- Catalogs and maintains an inventory for all College furniture and condition information; oversee the retrieval, delivery, and installation of furnishings in storage;
- Tracks stored information for cyclical purchasing and upkeep of classroom furniture and orders replacement furniture as needed;
- Develops and implements moving and relocation plans;
- Oversees trade, design, and other professional personnel in the deployment of furniture and space planning alterations or renovations projects, ensuring completeness, accuracy and adherence to contract specifications;
- Prepares work orders, project status reports, change orders, compliance with contract specifications and prepare reports as required; develops integrated project schedules and coordinates with Facilities Services Operation Clerks;
- Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor degree in a related discipline such as interior design or architecture and 4 years experience of which 2 years are in a large, unionized or post-secondary environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- High proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office suite including MS Project;
- Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the delivery of space planning, alteration and renovation projects, as well as a strong understanding of related building systems including HVAC, lighting, life safety systems, and security;
- Proven written, visual, and oral communications skills; demonstrated time-management, critical thinking and decision-making skills;
- Knowledge of applicable BC Building and Fire codes;
- Team player with ability to work independently and proven communication skills for interacting with college community and external providers;
- A valid Class 5 B.C driver’s license.
