Laboratory Assistant I

Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Calgary STI Clinic Manager, the Medical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to specimen receiving and processing, data entry, quality management, troubleshooting, and general support at the STI Clinic. Processes a variety of specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, as appropriate to their scope of work. Operates, maintains and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. Follows safety procedures and policies, uses personal protective equipment appropriately and identifies/reports unsafe conditions. Maintains a clean, safe and organized work area. Recognizes and assesses unusual or abnormal findings. Escalates problems, issues, and occurrences as required and documents appropriately. Identifies opportunities for safer practices and workflow improvement and applies process improvement principles to support and make changes. Delivers client centered care, answers inquiries, and responds to requests for in information for patients and other health care providers. Performs administrative duties such as filing, faxing, reports distribution and archiving when required. Documents and participates in the training and orientation of students and staff. Monitors, orders, rotates, distributes and stores supplies as applicable. Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Required Qualifications**:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant training program.
**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certificate or Medical Laboratory Technologist diploma from an educational institute within Canada satisfactory to CLS or MLA certification through CSMLS. Competency in phlebotomy and experience with adult patients. Experience/lived experience in creating safer spaces for all people including all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions, those who identify as people of colour, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, or newcomers to Canada. Computer proficiency with complex programs and databases; documentation is completed in the Electronic Medical Records. Ability to think independently and work in a fast-paced and demanding work environment. Excellent attendance record & reliability. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) demonstrated through previous employment records & references. Ability to independently support a patient to the ground or sustain a patient in Trendelenburg position (lift/carry 30+ lbs. - waist to floor, floor to crown). Manual dexterity is constantly required. Prolonged standing or walking and bending. Ability to handle periods of intense activity and multi-task throughout high-volume clinics, including moving throughout the clinic up to 8 km per shift. Ability to sustain periods of stationary activity.
**Preferred Qualifications**:
One year of experience in a healthcare setting, including customer service and specimen handling. Current working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite programs. Current working knowledge of STBBIs, lived experience/experience working with people disproportionately impacted by health disparities & various diverse groups. References to back up soft skills in time management, efficiency, prioritization & accountability.
