The Royal Ontario Museum is seeking a motivated full-time product buyer who will perform duties related to broad based retail gift product buying to meet the goals and needs of the ROM’s Retail business which serves a diverse audience of shoppers (children, adults, seniors, ROM members, community members, stakeholders & patrons). The Product Buyer, Retail Operations will buy products to promote the museum’s current research, exhibitions, and galleries.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Research product categories as they complement ROM curatorial, initiatives and strategic plan.
- Analyze market trends to create product assortments and identify growth opportunities and risks.
- React to world-wide market changes in demand and supply chain logistics.
- Attend trade shows.
- Adhere to established retail open to buy product category budgets.
- Monitor store sales, product margins, KPIs to ensure ROM Retail meets and exceeds targets.
- Manage plan for product inventory levels to meet shopper buying volumes.
- Create reports in the areas of trends, sales forecasting.
- Understand vendor management with key emphasis on price and quantity negotiation.
- Use tact & diplomacy in dealing with independent and community-based artists & suppliers.
- Successfully negotiate product purchases from on-line multi-vendor sites, in-person suppliers, Artists & Community artist collectives.
- Liaise with other ROM departments to ensure product categories/stories are aligned with Cross departmental initiatives.
- Create product assortment collage/look books for all key product stories, feature exhibition offers.
- Liaise with Retail team BOH & FOH to ensure supply meets demand.
- Work with Coordinator Shopify Retail Operations regarding Ecommerce product postings.
- Work with Coordinator Retail Administration regarding vendor payments & reports as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- University degree in Business and or Supply Management and plus a diploma in Supply Chain Procurement plus eight (8) years of related experience OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
- Proven experience as a retail buyer or relevant role
- Outstanding oral and written communication and customer service skills
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Demonstrated skills in effective facilitation and negotiation with new and existing suppliers, artists etc.
- Familiarity with current purchasing best practices
- Familiarity with market research, data analysis and forecasting techniques
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office; working knowledge of purchasing software (e.g. Shopify Plus-Stocky).
- Experience in developing and controlling budgets for retail store product purchasing.
- Must have ability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends based on seasonal buying, peak museum visitation and deadlines.
- French language knowledge would be an asset.
