**Job Summary**
- Reporting to the Custodial Supervisor, the General Foreperson (G/F) is responsible for the day-to-day aspects of custodial maintenance and plays an important leadership role in the daily management of custodians, which includes the following; scheduling/pre-planning work, directing and monitoring work-related activity, ensuring that work is performed in a safe manner adhering to all related safety guidelines and regulations, quality of workmanship, work process efficiency, production costs and manage the morale and motivation of the staff. The G/F must be familiar with and capable of performing all duties of the Working Foreperson (W/F).

**Key Responsibilities**
- Co-ordinates all custodial work.
- Ensures FM Safety Program and all relevant safety legislation is adhered to.
- In the absence of a supervisor, may assume the supervisory function.
- Assigns work to and supervises W/F as it relates to summer work within residence.
- Orders cleaning materials for staff, coordinates delivery to specific locations.
- Co-ordinates overtime distribution as required and approved by the Supervisor.
- Evaluates cleaning routes for on-going viability.
- Ensures custodial daily time entry is accurate, complete and approved utilizing FAMIS.
- Utilizing FAMIS, plans ahead and expedites work to ensure staff time, material, and other resources are utilized to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provides training for new staff.
- Evaluates W/F performance in supervising staff and projects.
- Participates in evaluations of probationary employees.
- Inventories and allocates equipment.
- Utilizing FAMIS, may generate Purchase Requisitions for special work.
- Advises supervisor of staffing complement requirements.
- Ensures staff are properly trained and adequately skilled to perform assigned tasks.
- Participates in meetings as required.
- Performs scheduling duties as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to work weekends as operational needs require.

**Note**
- This position is physically demanding. Extensive kneeling, bending, standing and squatting required.

**Required Qualifications**
- Conversant with the FM Safety program and takes leadership role in promoting safety.
- Knowledge and regular training in WHMIS and applicable safety legislation; as well as safety pertaining to laboratories (i.e. Red Labs).
- Knowledgeable concerning the work performed by the employees in the department/areas to which s/he is assigned.
- Knowledgeable of the duties of his/her Supervisor.
- Comprehensive understanding of Dalhousie’s cleaning practices and equipment.
- Superior knowledge of cleaning products used at Dalhousie.
- Detailed understanding of custodial routing.
- Knowledge and experience with budgets & budget reports (preferred).
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.), FAMIS
- Demonstrated leadership qualities, initiative and ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Develops effective working relationships with custodians and customers.
- Motivates and leads by example.
- Team oriented and works in a collaborative manner with clients and fellow employees.
- Client focused - seeks client input and responds in an appropriate and professional manner.
