Job Summary

at UBC is a growing academic unit within the Faculty of Science. Given the recent explosion in the demand for computational training, we have launched educational and learning technology (ELT) in many of our courses to provide leading, modern statistical and data sciences education. To support this teaching mission, we are seeking a UNIX IT Administrator who is passionate about supporting technology tools and contributing to the development of open-source software for higher education.
- You will join a collaborative IT team and be the key person responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and developing teaching software running on Linux servers. This includes deploying and tearing down a range of ELT platforms in our undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. A key role will be in providing real-time monitoring, support, and solving issues for instructors who deliver these courses to ensure smooth operation. You will also contribute patches and improvements to open-source ELT software written in Python to facilitate the Department's academic and teaching needs.

Organizational Status
- The Department of Statistics provides undergraduate and graduate teaching and training in statistical and data sciences, not only to students majoring in Statistics, but also to students from many other disciplines on campus. In addition to regular credit education programs, we partner with the

- Master of Data Science program (MDS)
- We also have a vibrant research community where our research groups,
- Applied Statistics and Data Science (ASDa)
and Short-Term Consulting Services (STCS), provides research support and statistical consulting services to communities within and outside of UBC.
- The UNIX IT Administrator works with the Department’s IT team to provide technical support and guidance to faculty members and other members of instructional teams for the deployment of ELT in their courses. This position reports directly to the Director of the IT team.

Work Performed- Administer Linux servers running ELT-related software (e.g., JupyterHub, Docker) that are vital to the Department’s courses- Develop, debug, and make improvements to open-source ELT software written in Python-
- Diagnose and troubleshoot problems arising in ZFS (FreeNAS), RedHat/Centos Kernel-based virtual machines (KVM), automation tools such as Kickstart and Ansible- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to server hardware- Provide comprehensive guidance to instructors who use ELT platforms; including helping instructors scope systems needs given course content and class size, and verify correct functioning- Provide frontline support to instructor queries and issues regarding their ELT platforms- Work together with the others in the IT team to resolve ELT issues- Transition student work to long-term storage to preserve records after courses end; and remove any old records that can be discarded- Tear down and clean up ELT platforms and servers as necessary- Conduct testing of customized software to ensure platforms and systems perform as expected- Provide technical expertise, training, and consultation to members of our instructional teams and junior staff- Establish and maintain documentation related to the management of ELT software and systems- Maintain appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques, programming languages, and tools- Contribute to and lead other projects as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The UNIX IT Administrator is expected to work independently and take ownership of the smooth implementation, operation, and teardown of educational and learning technologies in the Department’s courses. Poor or slow performance, especially regarding real-time support and troubleshooting, will cause challenges for course instructors and severely reduce the quality of the teaching programs delivered.
