**Northern Spotted Owl Field Technicians**:
The BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is seeking technicians for work on the Northern Spotted Owl Field Inventory and Reestablishment Program. The technicians will assist Provincial Government and BCCF staff with placement and retrieval of Acoustic Recording Units (ARUs) and data for the detection and monitoring of Spotted and Barred Owls throughout the Northern Spotted Owl range within BC. Pay rate $18/hr. Allowances for food and field gear will be provided.

**Duties Include**:
**Inventory**

Call play-back inventories, ARU placement and retrieval for both Spotted and Barred Owls are conducted in old-growth forests across the range of the Northern Spotted Owl. Call play-back inventories are conducted at night surveying along logging roads and or by hiking through forest. The inventories follow the provincial resource inventory standards committee protocols vol. 42. (ftp://nris.mt.gov/Public/Maxell/Owl_Surveys/BC_Inventory_Methods_Owls_2006.pdf.

ARU deployment and data retrieval is done during the day. NOTE: _CANDIDATES MUST BE COMFORTABLE HIKING OFF TRAIL THROUGH FOREST AND NAVIGATING CHALLENGING TERRAIN._

**Capture/Banding/Radio-Telemetry**

The position may require capture and relocation of Barred Owls outside of the Spotted Owls reestablishment zone. NOTE: CANDIDATES MUST BE COMFORTABLE HANDLING LIVE RODENTS (MICE). Any captured Spotted and Barred Owls are fitted with USFW metal lock on bands as well as color bands for future id. Currently backpack style radios and or GPS beacons are attached to captured Spotted and Barred Owls. Hands on training in banding and backing will be provided if necessary. NOTE: CANDIDATES MUST BE COMFORTABLE AND PREPARED TO HANDLE LARGE RAPTORS.

**Field Work**

Field shifts typically last 8-10 days and require camping at field sites and living out of a work truck. Stipend for gear and food is provided for all field days. Field days will split 50% day work and 50% night work.

**Essential Qualifications**
- Applicants must be legally eligible for work in Canada.
- Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or diploma related to fields in _biology, zoology, conservation, and or forestry._
- Applicants must have previous backcountry experience and related field gear.
- Applicants must be physically fit, capable of lifting 50lbs and comfortable hiking 15km on and off road, and be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Applicants must be willing to work a varied schedule that includes evening shifts, and be available to work 7 days a week (10 day shift Tuesday - Thursday of the following week).
- Applicants must possess a driver’s license that is valid for use in BC.
- Applicants must be based out of Squamish or the surrounding area.

**Asset Qualifications**
- Biological work experience in the conservation of threatened and/or endangered species,
- Bird handling skills and banding skills,
- Experience working with ARUs
- Experience working outdoors in a variety of conditions including off trail navigation,
- Competency in using Excel and Word,
- Valid First aid certification
