The Switchpersons with Cando Rail & Terminals are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services at an industrial site in Belle Plaine, SK. Working in a fast-paced, customer oriented environment, the Operator/Conductor must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills. **_T_**_hi_**_s is a casual position._**
**Roles and Responsibilities**
The incumbent works in a team environment to provide safe and effective switching services. Responsibilities include:
- Ensure safe operation of the locomotive and train movements including conducting clear and concise job briefings
- Provide protection of train, track, and equipment
- Perform plant and equipment inspections and air brake tests
- Comply with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practicing and promoting safe work habits
- Assist with railcar cleaning and repair as needed
- Keep the interior of the locomotive safe, clean, and tidy
- Complete daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices
- Promptly report all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Team Leader and/or Manager
- Complete daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
- Exert best effort to protect human life, human safety and company property
- Actively participate with the team and provide excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
- Participate in training or company initiatives as required
**Skills, Knowledge & Abilities**
- Strong problem solving, decision making, and customer service skills; excellent team player
- Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
- Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and switching lists
- Knowledge with technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
- Meet all customer site requirements including criminal record clearance, employment verification, and driver's abstract clearance
- Hold and maintain safety critical medical status including passing drug and alcohol testing
**Education & Experience**
- Hold and maintain valid CROR certification in addition to any other site required training
- Experience as an operator or groundsperson an asset
