**Job description**

Margaret’s is seeking a hard-working and committed Cook that will report directly to the Drop-In Coordinator and will work onsite at our Drop-In Centre in downtown Toronto.

**Responsibilities include, but not limited to, the following**:

- Prepare and cook/warm complete meals or individual dishes and foods
- Prepare and cook special meals for clients as instructed by dietitian or chef
- Schedule and supervise Kitchen Helpers/Kitchen aid
- Oversee kitchen operations
- Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies, and equipment
- Ensure maintenance of a clean kitchen and work area (such as wiping counters, washing floors, cleaning and maintaining equipment, washing, drying, and organizing dishes, etc.)
- Plan menus, determine size of food portions, estimate food requirements and costs, and monitor and order supplies
- Serve and replenish food/beverages
- Advise management team on budgetary, operational, and menu-related matters
- Follow safe handling practices when preparing and handling food
- Ensure food meets quality standards as required by law, including food storage, preparation (food temperatures), and safe, environmentally conscious disposal of waste and chemicals
- Ensure that prepared food meets or exceeds nutritional standards as set out by the Government of Canada’s Food Guide
- Estimate food requirements and ensure weekly/biweekly ordering of meat, dairy, produce, and other material
- Arrange for equipment purchases and general repairs as needed
- Monitor consumption
- Engage with Drop In visitors/clients
- Conduct training for kitchen staff (conditional)
- Assist with other tasks as assigned and/or required

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a professional cook position, preparing large quantities of food
- Completion of one or more of the following:

- Three-year apprenticeship program for cooks
- College or other program in cookingo Several years of commercial cooking experience *
- Food Handlers Certificate (ONTARIO) required, or must be willing to complete certification
- Experience handling, preparing, storing, and disposing of food in compliance with Ontario’s Food Safety Laws and Regulations, or experience complying with the provisions of a comparable jurisdiction
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Strong knowledge in proper food handling, safety and sanitation standards
- Able to work in a fast
- paced work environment.
- Trade certification an asset; Red Seal endorsement an asset

**Salary**: $15.50-$22.00 per hour
