_This position supports participants of the Sunset Community's Independent Living Program. Frequent travelling is required, in particular to and from a participants home located within Cumberland County._

**Salary & Benefits**

The wage for this position is **$18.96/hr**. during the probation period. Upon completion of the 520 hour probation period, the wage automatically increases to **$20.3322/hr**. Additionally, this position has shift differentials of **$2.25/hr**. for Weekend shifts. Finally, this position has travel pay of $0.51 per km.

Benefits are available to those who enter permanent positions (or temporary positions longer than one year). This includes Health, Dental, Group & Dependent Life, and Long Term Disability (which are compulsory). Those with permanent positions can enroll in optional Life Insurance, Critical Illness, and AD&D (which are optional).

We offer one of the best Pension Plans in all of Nova Scotia (NSHEPP: 7.82% Employee, 9.22% Employer, for a total of **17.04%**). Employees are eligible to enroll after two years of service as a casual, or after 3 months of service in a position. Those with past history with NSHEPP can transfer to us and continue participation in the plan.

**Position Scope**:
The Community Support Worker supports Participants who reside in the community, and shares responsibility with the _Manager, Community Living_ and DCS/DSP counterparts, to ensure the program is administered in such a manner that fosters and promotes independence, self reliance, security, and social inclusion. This is achieved by supporting a flexible and responsive delivery of service that incorporates the strengths of each Participant in addition to their personal and community resources. This program is delivered using a person-directed and collaborative approach.

**Principal Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the _Manager, Community Living_, the Community Support Worker is responsible for:

- Assisting participants to maximize independence in their instrumental activities of daily living (such as, but not limited to: maintaining a household, laundry, shopping, budgeting and banking, meal prep, transportation, and leisure activities);
- Assist Participant(s) to build and maintain connections and relationships with family, friends, and other community members and/or resources;
- Assist Participants with accessing professional supports and the promotion and maintenance of their health and wellness, including medication management and administration (as required);
- Recognize the potential of a Participant, and facilitate opportunities for their continued growth and development as an individual;
- Delay the need for (or assist in the prevention of) admission to a staffed residential support option;
- Partake in the creation and implementation of person-centered reviews and individual contracts; and
- Other duties, as assigned by the _Manager, Community Living_.

**Required Qualifications**:

- Graduation from Grade 12 (or GED) with desire to support people with disabilities.
- Acquire and maintain the Core Competencies set forth by the Department of Community Services (including, but not limited to): Fire and Life safety, WHMIS, MANDT training, Medication Awareness and Administration, and Basic Principles and Practices of Personal Care
- A valid and current Class 5 Driver's License
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including frequent travel
- Possess a safe and reliable vehicle, which has a current and valid provincial safety inspection, as well as the appropriate tires for the season. Must be willing to use this vehicle for work.
- Must be able to insure their personal vehicle with $2,000,000 liability coverage (the Employer will cover the costs of increase in insurance premiums, upon submission of proof)
- Must be able to work independently and with mínimal supervision.
- Must be able to support participants using a person-centered approach.

**Preferred Qualifications**:

- Graduation from a recognized Human Services Worker, Developmental Worker, Residential Rehabilitation Worker, Continuing Care Assistant, or Social Worker program;
- Experience supporting individuals with disabilities in an independent living setting
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Able to work co-operatively with all members of the Sunset Community
