Burnaby, Canada Engineers and Geoscientists BC Full time

**Engineers & Geoscientists BC** is currently searching for an **Articling Student** to join our team.

Are you a bright law student who is looking for something other than the traditional law firm articles and career path? Are you excited by the prospect of doing rewarding work that protects the public interest, under a new regulatory regime?

Engineers and Geoscientists BC is seeking an articling student to join a team of 6 lawyers in our Legislation, Ethics and Compliance department. The work is challenging and we have high expectations regarding work quality and attention to detail. However, we also appreciate that all staff have busy lives outside of work, and our articling students are no exception. We expect hard work from you during the day, but your evenings and weekends will generally be your own.

Prior students have gone on to a variety of positions after articling, including positions with other regulatory bodies, with government, with us, and in private practice.

**WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING**
- Analyzing new and emerging issues related to the Professional Governance Act, S.B.C. 2018, c. 47.
- Conducting legal research into policy, privacy, and governance issues and preparing legal memoranda, presentations and reports.
- Assisting with the investigation and discipline of registrants of Engineers and Geoscientists BC, participating in the drafting and negotiation of Consent Orders, assisting with disciplinary hearings, and assisting with the monitoring of compliance and discipline orders.
- Gathering information and data from various sources including other regulatory bodies.
- Additional tasks that arise in support of the Legislation, Ethics, and Compliance department.

During the articling period, the Articling Student will be given training in ethics, practice management and lawyering skills (including research, writing, drafting, advocacy, negotiation and/or mediation, interviewing, and problem solving) as required by the Law Society of British Columbia’s articling skills and practice checklist. A one-month secondment at an external law firm is also a possibility.

It is expected that the Articling Student will be exposed to a number of different practice areas. The principal practice areas involved in the role will be administrative law, civil litigation and privacy law.
