**Job Summary**

The primary responsibility of the Relief Worker is to provide direct and ongoing supervision and care to youth, as part of their daily living environment.

Many of the tasks that a Relief Worker must be able to perform for youth are parental care functions. Adolescence and early adulthood is a period of relatively rapid change and growth. Recognition and understanding of these changes, and promotion of them to take place in a safe, supportive and loving environment, is part of basic care.

The central purpose of Shelter Services work is to utilize relationship building, assessment, intervention, prevention, nurturing, counselling and role modelling skills to provide time-limited, change oriented care for youth.

The common denomination in Kennedy House Youth Services Shelter Program is the ability of the staff to structure the daily living environment and their own behaviour in a way that strives to achieve specific changes in the youth’ behaviour.

**Job Functions**
- To be responsible for a designated number of youth during daytime, evening and overnight shifts.
- Will adhere to the principal and obligation of confidentiality with respect to the clients.
- Will understand and master the procedures, policies, requirements and related functions of the job.
- Will get the job done as related to specific duties, responsibilities and objectives.
- Will be required to convey information and express ideas in a clear and concise manner (both written and orally).
- Will respond effectively to the process of supervision.
- Will cooperate with and maintain effective relationships, deal effectively with situations that involve attitudes, opinions and feelings of others.
- Will be able to grasp, interpret and adjust to new situations, methods and procedures.
- Will have skill in reaching sound conclusions based on information available, and show readiness to make decisions and implement action.
- Will carry out all job responsibilities in a safe and cautious manner, ensuring that agency commitment to employee health is upheld.
- Will monitor the safety of the work site and bring to the attention of the Supervisor any potential hazardous situations.
- Will ensure that the physical plant presentation is neat, tidy and that high personal hygiene standards are upheld.
- Will understand that as an employee of Kennedy House Youth Services, you represent the agency, hence you are to ensure a respectable and professional presentation at all times.

**Required Education, Skills and Qualifications**

**Knowledge and Skills Required**
- General knowledge of developmental needs (intellectual, emotional, physical and social) of youth and youths.
- Appreciation of the youth/adolescent’s needs for stable, consistent caring from adults.
- Demonstrated skills pertinent to the functions to be undertaken.
- Ability to relate appropriately to youth
- Ability to write clear, punctual and concise reports.
- Maturity, reliability and dependability pertinent.
- A College diploma or equivalent or a BA and related experience are preferred.
- Certification in both First Aid and CPR courses are essential.
- Acceptable criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search.
- Physically fit to do the job.

Wage $16 per hour

Kennedy House Youth Services has a long and fine tradition of providing personal care for young people in the Greater Toronto Area. We started with an initial family-like group home in 1971 and have added along the way additional residential programs, a state-of-the-art secure custody facility, day treatment programs, shelter services, bailiff services, and outreach community services in designated priority neighbourhoods.

Kennedy House works with youth to enable them to grow as individuals to contribute to as members of the community. This is achieved by providing customized support and building trusting relationships.
