Nanaimo’s Department of Psychiatry consists of adult, child and youth and geriatric psychiatrists working in community and acute settings.
Acute services are provided at NRGH, which has 224 acute care beds and a 24-bed inpatient psychiatry unit. In September 2012 our new Emergency Department opened, which a 4-bed Psychiatric intensive Care Unit (PICU) and busy Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES).
Community services are provided through community mental health and substance use treatment teams. These community teams provide rehab support and case management for adults, as well as consultation and psychiatric clinical services for primary care referrals.
The locum Psychiatrist would be joining a collegial psychiatrist group from acute and community settings within the Nanaimo Mental Health and Substance Use programs. On-call responsibility is mandatory for Island Health psychiatrists, under a Departmental MOCAP contract, and averages one weekend day every 4-6 weeks. After hours phone coverage is shared with a second psychiatrist for the following week.
Locum dates are flexible throughout the year, with a specific need upcoming for August 2025 for 6 weeks.
