**Position Description**:
The Hospital for Sick Children is hiring a Laboratory Specialist to join our innovative multi-disciplinary clinical diagnostics and academic team. The successful applicant will be part of a team that develops and implements new tests, analytic tools, and technologies to meet the needs of the clinical programs of the Hospital. The Laboratory Specialist will work in Routine Chemistry within the Division of Biochemistry.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

**Here's What You'll Get To Do**
- Practice and perform laboratory test validation(s) and procedures, as assigned, accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs).
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform basic repairs on Laboratory instruments, as needed.
- Train staff when new assays and/or changes to existing methods are made.
- Provide education sessions and hands-on teaching sessions for students, residents, and clinical laboratory staff.
- Understand the Quality Control, Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs to support the effective operation of the diagnostic laboratory, and to ensure that safety guidelines are followed.
- Perform assay development, validation, and optimization of lab-developed tests, as well as participating in the validation of LIS upgrades prior to implementation.
- Develop computer-based tools or implement commercial software that can be used to improve and automate data analysis.
- Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to keep abreast of relevant new developments and obtain information regarding the design and development of original procedures and techniques.
- Participate and/or present at department meetings, rounds, and/or national conferences/workshops to a broad audience ranging from laboratory staff to primary care clinicians, in collaboration with the Clinical Biochemists.

**Here's What You'll Need**
- PhD or MSc in Chemistry (analytical), Biochemistry or a related field required.
- Experience into Chemistry instrumentation such as the Roche Cobas preferred.
- Proven competence and experience in a clinical Biochemistry laboratory and/or diagnostic test development setting and demonstrated analytical and scientific competence.
- Working knowledge of statistical methods of laboratory data required.
- Demonstrated experience in training personnel, providing educational lectures or workshops.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and a team player with a high degree of independence and professionalism.
