Job Summary

The Manager, Freight Collections is responsible for achieving Accounts Receivable (AR) targets set out by the Senior Manager, Receivables Management. The role contributes to CN’s cash flow objectives and leads the team’s collections’ activities and resolves issues concerning unpaid receivables. Through coaching, guidance, and setting priorities, the incumbent ensures that the Collections team, including the Assistant Managers, Escalation Coordinators, Composite and Senior Accounting Representatives, maximizes its efforts to collect owed amounts.

Main Responsibilities

Collections and Staff Management
- Lead a team towards achieving their collection and development goals
- Lead and execute collection strategies and achieve collections targets
- Lead and monitor team workload, schedules, priorities, and performance to ensure optimal productivity
- Act as the point of contact to resolve disputes and late payment behaviour
- Recommend suspension of credit or bad debt provisions
- Analyze detailed reports to identify accounts that are not collectible and require escalation
- Approve refunds per Delegation of Authority (DOA)
- Coach and mentor team members and conduct informal training sessions
- Review team performance, evaluate effectiveness, and seek opportunities for improvement

Facilitate Collections Resolution Activities
- Lead escalated collections’ efforts on complex accounts
- Coordinate escalation of accounts and disputes to senior management
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to improve cash flow and drive resolution of customer issues
- Perform detailed investigations, root cause analysis, and recommend solutions for problem accounts
- Ensure compliance with CN’s credit terms

Continuous Improvement Activities
- Review performance measurements and metrics to monitor and evaluate process effectiveness
- Identify and recommend system and process improvements
- Promote eCommerce solutions with customers such as electronic invoicing, payments, and remittance details
- Lead and collaborate in continuous improvement initiatives to ensure efficiency and a high level of performance leading to customer satisfaction

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress.

**Requirements**:
Experience

Accounts Receivable and Collections
- Minimum 5 years of accounts receivable and collections experience

Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation*
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Knowledge of the order to cash pipeline for CN’s Business Units and industries
- Knowledge of processes for the bill of lading, waybill, car movement, pricing, rating, invoicing, payments, and dispute resolution
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Business Objects)
- Knowledge of Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP), Revenue Management System (RMS), Service Reliability System (SRS), Pricing Database (PDB), eBill, Integrated Receivables (IR), and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
- Fluently bilingual, both written and verbal (English, French)
