**AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY**:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Horticulture, ensures the most efficient use of personnel, equipment and materials in the provision of horticultural services for small trees, shrub beds, annual and perennial flowerbeds, landscape construction and special displays. Provides leadership, plans, co-ordinates schedules, recruits, trains, evaluates and supervises staff
- Plans, co-ordinates, schedules, recruits, evaluates and supervises the Horticultural Services staff
- Inspect all work areas to ensure productivity, proper operation, cleanliness and safety
- Respond to all public and internal enquiries regarding trees, shrubs and flowers and initiates follow-up action as required
- Provide direction and supervision to contractors, including the preparation and enforcement of contract specifications, analysis of performance and the approval for payment
- Inspect and grant or deny acceptance of all plant material installed by private contractors
- Participate at meetings with internal and external customers regarding the maintenance, usage or protection of City trees, shrubs or floral displays.
- Maintain open communication with the Supervisor through both regular verbal and written reports on current crew status
- Train staff to ensure current techniques, procedures and equipment is being utilized to ensure compliance while meeting the business needs of the Corporation.
- Assist in preparation of operating and capital budget as they relate to horticulture.
- Prepare, monitor and control the annual department-operating budget.
- Recommend training and on-site procedure changes, as required due to regulatory updates to ensure safety and compliance.
- Promote the organization’s programs and services through attendance at exhibits and trade
- Provide on-call foreperson services on a rotational basis with other divisional forepersons, as and when required

**SELECTION CRITERIA**:
**EDUCATION**:

- Post-secondary Diploma or Certificate in Parks Management, Arboriculture, Horticulture Science or equivalent

**REQUIRED EXPERIENCE**:

- Minimum three (3) years of practical field experience in urban horticulture
- Two (2) years team lead or supervisory experience in a unionized environment

**OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS**:

- Must possess a “Exterminator License” from the Ministry of the Environment;
- Good written and verbal skills are essential
- Knowledge of the use/operation of computers, including MS Office; City Works, Hanson’s “Information Management System” an asset
- Excellent customer service/public relations skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Must possess a valid Ontario “G” Driver’s Licence
- Good performance and work record
