During the ice season, as an Ice Maker at the City of Prince Rupert, your contribution allows
for the opening of our Aquatic Centre, Recreation Complex and Ice Arena. You will utilize your
high degree of maturity and sound judgment to ensure the safe operation of our ammonia
refrigeration plant and connected systems. Your skill and attention to detail in maintaining
acceptable ice conditions and high cleanliness, safety, and sanitation in our facilities will be
met with gratitude from our Prince Rupert Ice Skating and Recreation community and visitors
alike. Your positive attitude and good nature will help build lasting relationships for years.

**APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM**:
The successful applicant will participate in a BC Refrigeration Operator Certificate - Minimum
Class 5 program to meet the minimum education requirements of the ICE MAKER II. The City
of Prince Rupert will cover the cost of training and travel/accommodation (if any); however,
the virtual classroom option will be the first choice.

During the apprenticeship, the hourly wage will be as follows:
the **ICE MAKER I** rate - $31.57/hr.

**MAKER I** rate for the duration of the apprenticeship - $33.23.

5 certification criteria - $36.51

three (3) years.

Should the successful applicant voluntarily terminate their employment with the City within
three (3) years of starting the position, they will repay the City of Prince Rupert on the
following scale with percentages treated as a lump sum and not pro-rated:
**Within one (1) year from the hire date **- 100% reimbursement of the training program cost***
**Between the First and Second years **- 50% reimbursement of the training program cost***
**Between the Second and Third years** - 25% reimbursement of the training program cost***
**After the Third year **- 0% reimbursement

**What you’ll do
Maintain and operate the refrigeration plant, arena ice and related equipment
Work evenings and weekends during the ice season
Maintain and perform minor repairs to the facility and related equipment
Perform set-up/take-down duties for events
Supervise facility users, enforcing the rules, regulations, and code of conduct at all

events
Maintain a clean and safe working environment
Perform routine cleaning/maintenance in the arena
Monitor and assist with cleaning/maintenance within the Recreation Complex
Semi-skilled maintenance projects (painting, refinishing floors etc.)
Assist with collecting skate rental/sharpening tickets and distributing rental skates to

customers
Sharpen skates as required
Maintain an organized and clean skate shop

thoroughly
Report hazards and make recommendations to enhance building and equipment

functionality
Assists with monitoring and signing in participants to programs
Use excellent customer service skills when helping customers
Adhere to the Department policies and those set forth in the employee handbook

Learn about programs and events held at the Recreation facilities to be able to answer
questions

Promote and serve as a goodwill ambassador of the Recreation and Community Services
department to the public and patrons

Other related duties as assigned

**What you bring
Grade 12 or GED
Willingness to obtain WHMIS Certification
Willingness to obtain Standard First Aid, CPR-C, AED
Valid BC Driver’s license (Class 5) or equivalent
Ability and flexibility to work evenings and weekends
Ability to work with mínimal supervision
Ability to follow safe work practices and procedures
Ability to obtain and maintain a clean Criminal Record Check
Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance,

construction and repair activities related to municipal infrastructure
Skill in operating tools and equipment, such as mowers, tractors, hand tools and gas,

diesel or air-powered tools
