**THE OPPORTUNITY**: PARENT & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR - SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION (TECHNICAL & RESOURCE SUPPORT D)
SACY (Supporting and Connecting Youth) Substance Use Prevention Program is a joint initiative of the Vancouver Board of Education and Vancouver Coastal Health. SACY conducts a range of strategic and multi-level activities designed to increase the capacity of schools to prevent, delay, and reduce problematic substance use and strengthen mental well-being through health promotion and elevating youth wellness. The SACY model emphasizes relationships, connectedness, positive youth development, adult (parents and teachers) learning and support, and social and emotional learning.
**In this position, you will**:
Represent the SACY Parent Engagement stream within the SACY team, the community and on committees as requested.
Co-create and deliver district wide, evidence-based, parent education on topics including adolescence substance use, parent communication skills, parenting styles, youth mental health support, family stress, adolescent development, available resources.
Guide SACY parent stream in evidence-based prevention and maintain consistency of program delivery district wide.
Provide one-to-one support and referrals to parents referred from Counsellors, administrators, and SACY Youth Engagement workers.
Collaborate with SWIS/MCLW to offer culturally appropriate, district wide parent education, including SU and MH literacy and universal core parenting approaches.
Coordinate and help deliver SACY’s district school-based Capacity Cafes.
Offer information sessions on ways to support families to keep students in school for counsellors, teachers and administrators, and support staff.
Deliver and co-create district wide sessions on topics such as: Risks of Affluence; Evidence-based SU education for teachers; Understanding SU context in Vancouver.
Conduct school-based workshops and PAC presentations.
Identify emerging issues and service gaps with respect to parent SU prevention.
Maintain relationships and collaboration with key parent-serving community agencies including Odyssey/Nexus/Parents Together and CYMH parent groups (Connect, ADHD parent group, Responsive Parenting group).
Deliver the SACY Parent Engagement program consistent with relevant Vancouver Board of Education policies and procedures.
Report, monitor, communicate and assess SACY Parent Engagement stream activities with the rest of the SACY team.
Prepare a variety of charts, records and reports and conduct basic research on relevant topics.
Provide technical and resource support to the district and to schools.
Perform other duties within the job band as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of grade 12 plus 4 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a degree in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education.
Minimum 5 years of experience facilitating individual and group support for parents struggling with the changes of adolescence and the role of parents, as well as youth mental health and substance use concerns.
Extensive knowledge of child/youth development, and related approaches to parenting youth including authoritative parenting, attachment theory, theories of risk and resilience, positive youth development/positive psychology.
Experience and knowledge in helping parents/caregivers support adolescents, enhance their social and emotional development, and strengthen family relationships in a non-therapeutic setting.
Knowledge of motivational interviewing skills, cognitive behavioural therapy practices, brief intervention, and Transtheoretical Model of Change theory and applying/translating these approaches into accessible, hands-on practices for families in the form of workshop activities, presentations, and one-to-one support in parenting.
Knowledge and experience in trauma informed practices, anti-oppressive approaches, and culturally inclusive practice required.
Experience in providing addiction support, informal assessment, informed referrals to relevant substance use and mental health services and agencies and effectively operationalize a district wide program as part of a team.
Experience with program development, coordination and delivery required. Proficiency in MS Office programs,
