Individual and Family Counsellor

The Individual Youth Counsellor will provide counselling support to 360°kids’ predominantly female identifying youth including: female youth who are at risk of or have been involved in human trafficking. The Individual Youth Counsellor will provide counselling in a trauma informed, client centered approach where access to assessment and supports/ resources are made available both within the 360°kids environment and in the external community. Counselling focuses on personal and social development; behavioural change; cultural demands and expectations; and reintegration of youth with their families or transitioning to independent living. The Counsellor works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to serve the needs of youth in a holistic manner within the 360° Kids organization, advocates for the rights and appropriate supports for the youth, and provides any necessary case management supports.
Key Responsibility
- Provides trauma informed counselling to 360°kids youth, focusing on at-risk female identifying youth and female identifying youth involved in, or at risk of human trafficking,
- Support female identifying youth in resolving issues and/or fostering space to allow youth to develop to their maximum potential.
- Work as an integral, collaborative, supportive member of small and larger staff groupings in the delivery of counselling services.
- Supports female identifying youth in accessing additional resources and provides case management supports.
- Provide clinical consultations and support to the members 360°Kids staff.
- Collaborates with other 360°kids staff members to support clients with a wrap-around approach.
- Completes all mandatory recording and reporting including daily documentation, statistical data collection, demographics and completing registration forms. Provides reports and related information to the Manager of Youth Mental Health Services as required.
- Provides case management practices including conducting interviews, compilation of social histories, and assessment of strengths and needs of clients.
- Liaises with participants, parents, community partners, agencies, donors, coworkers, and volunteers. Develops positive relations with the communities being served by the program and with the general public.
- Represents the organization and program relationship as required with various segments of the community including schools, Children’s Aid Society, partner agency, clients, and parents.
- With the Manager of Youth Mental Health Services, creates, and implements approved strategies and plans that will result in the achievement of the program’s goals and objectives.
- Assist in the training of personnel and students, as applicable.
- Along with the Manager of Youth Mental Health Services, provides leadership for the student practicum through team building and motivation of employees; oversees plans for the training and development of placement students.
- Report on a regular basis to Manager of Youth Mental Health Services regarding issues of need and/or concern. In the event of a crisis or critical incident, immediately reports to appropriate level.
- Other duties as required.
Education &Skills required
- Master’s degree in social work, psychology or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education
- and experience.
- Current registration in good standing with the appropriate professional college
- Minimum 3 years’ experience required working with at risk female identifying youth and/or female identifying youth involved or at risk of human trafficking (asset)
- Clinical training and experience in individual counselling.
- Experience with MS Office, with the ability to prepare, and write reports and maintain same.
- Current first aid/CPR certification.
- Current vulnerable sector screening (criminal background check).
- Car and valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training (asset).
- Experience in assisting female identifying youth with psycho/social/physical, educational, emotional, and/or environmental issues in a variety of locations.
- Knowledge of issues surrounding human trafficking.
- Excellent assessment skills with experience responding to situations based on available information.
- Possesses strong personal ethics and integrity, as well as, exceptional interpersonal skills, including influencing, consensus/team building, facilitation, negotiation, conflict resolution, management, leadership, motivation, delegation, coaching/mentoring, and empowerment.
- Sound judgment, decision making, and problem-solving ability with the willingness to stand behind and take responsibility for decisions and actions.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively. Independent self-starter, with ability to work with mínimal supervision.
