Vancouver Fire Rescue Services is looking to hire in the Community Safety Division for the position of Fire Prevention Inspector. The successful applicant(s) will be working as a member of the community safety division, reporting to a Fire Prevention Officer. This is group 2 unionized local 18 IAFF position, working a four day (35 hour) work week. Hours of work may be temporarily modified to meet departmental needs.

This position enforces fire prevention regulations of the City of Vancouver and Province of BC. Inspectors conduct inspections on all types of new/existing buildings to ensure conformity/compliance with applicable by-laws, codes and regulations, and prepare and presents public fire safety education programs.

The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following tasks.
- Conducts fire and life safety inspections, pursuant to the powers prescribed in the BC _Fire Service Act _on all types of buildings
- Address Fire Code violations and fire safety hazards within the authority of the Act and applicable regulations.
- Conducts fire inspections pursuant to the limitations set out in the delegation of the Fire Chief and pursuant to the powers prescribed in the _various applicable bylaws_
- Issues Orders pursuant to the _Act _and Bylaws and/or prepares and swears Information's and Summonses
- Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints, installation guides, site plans, construction plans and specifications
- Receives complaints and inspects fire protection equipment and systems
- Prepares reports and maintains records detailing information about the property, violations observed and actions to be taken
- Completes detailed notes, prepares written information and provides evidence in Provincial Offences Court, Fire Safety Commission, Coroner's Inquests and tribunals, criminal/civil proceedings etc
- Performs public relations activities. Presents seminar on fire prevention and safety to groups and members of the public
- Delivers education programs related to fire safety when required
- Reviews and recommends for the approval of Fire Safety Plans
- Performs delegated duties for Chief Fire Official. Exercises all powers as a Local Assistant to the BC Fire Commissioner (LAFC)
- Performs administrative activities
- Support Division specific goals of emergency response and preparedness
- Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional development
- Must be able to follow direction of a senior officer
- Continually maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability and credibility, which are fundamental requirements for this position
- Function as an integral member of the City of Vancouver workforce to support corporate vision and mission statements
- Function as an integral member of the Vancouver Fire Services workforce to deliver and support Division specific vision and mission statements

Reguired Qualifications
- Completion of post-secondary degree or diploma in Fire Protection Technology, the equivalency or in a related field.
- Successful completion of NFPA 1031 "Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner", Level I, (Level II is an asset)
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate courteously, effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing with the public, co-workers and various government agencies, while maintaining discretion and confidentiality
- Demonstrated knowledge of the BC Fire Code, the BC Building Code, knowledge or experience in Public Education
- Possess strong organizational skills and well-developed presentation and public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative and without direct supervision
- Must be willing and able to wear all required uniform clothing and/or personal protective equipment as assigned/required.
- Ability to walk long distances and climb ladders/scaffolding while conducting inspections.
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification or Higher
- Be available for duty on a scheduled "call out" basis after hours, weekends and statutory holidays, shift work may be required occasionally.
