**Scope of Position**:
FirstConnect
- Exploring Housing Options and Community Connections is the first point of contact into the Waterloo Region emergency shelter system for individuals 18 and older who are at-risk of experiencing or who are experiencing homelessness. FirstConnect supports individuals with exploring alternatives to shelter, problem solving their challenges and situation, providing appropriate and accurate community referrals, and supporting the individuals throughout the call with homelessness prevention and shelter diversion. The Community Worker will be providing in-person support to individuals who are new to accessing shelter and supporting them with exiting the shelter as quickly as possible. This Worker will also provide in-person services around Waterloo Region to support individuals who require FirstConnect supports.

This position is Monday to Thursday, with some day and evening hours.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- To offer person-centered support for all individuals contacting FirstConnect who are at-risk of experiencing or who are experiencing homelessness by utilizing trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches;
- To provide in-person support in emergency shelters and across Waterloo Region;
- To explore homelessness prevention and shelter diversion by working through the individual’s experiences together;
- To provide appropriate referrals and connections to community organizations and social services that best support the individual;
- To act as a liaison and advocate between community partners and callers;
- To assist the individual in staying in or moving to safe and appropriate housing with program flex funds;
- To maintain accurate records of conversations and housing information in Waterloo Region’s Housing Stability System database, HIFIS;
- To conduct data collection to ensure the accuracy and ongoing improvement of our FirstConnect service.

**Qualifications/ Skills**
- Previous experience in community outreach, emergency shelter work, and/or peer support work;
- Knowledge on housing and homelessness in Waterloo Region, community resources and organizations, and our emergency shelter system;
- Skilled in motivational interviewing, strengths-based approaches and de-escalation;
- Ability to travel throughout Waterloo Region;
- Previous experience in community engagement is an asset.

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Kitchener-Waterloo, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

**Experience**:

- social work: 2 years (required)

Licence/Certification:

- First Aid Certification (preferred)
