This opportunity is available to applicants who are in their graduating year or who are graduates of Toronto Metropolitan University or a comparable degree in a program of instruction approved by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors, require a Practicum placement to sit the Examination to obtain the Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) and who meet the qualifications for this position as stated below. Please note that preference in hiring will be given to applicants without prior practicuM/Field training.

**Major Responsibilities**:
- Reports to the Manager, Healthy Environments and assists the Public Health Inspectors in ensuring compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and related provincial acts, regulations and municipal by-laws- Assists in the inspection of licensed premises, other facilities and premises for compliance with Municipal, Provincial and Federal legislation; investigates complaints, interprets results and takes appropriate action- During the Communicable Disease Control program rotation, reports to the Manager, Control of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control and assists the Public Health Inspectors or Public Health Nurses in responding to medium/high risk diseases ensuring compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and related provincial acts, regulations and municipal by-laws in CID/IC program specific issues- Collects samples and specimens and forwards to laboratory for analysis- Tests, investigates and examines any damaged or unsound foodstuff and recommends that it be condemned as appropriate (in consultation with the area Public Health Inspector)- Investigates environmental complaints and makes recommendations as appropriate- Advises residents and property owners on non-compliance and gives instructions regarding corrective measures- Assists in the preparation of summonses and legal documents- Participates in comprehensive food quality programs including special events- Completes pool inspections (except opening/initial inspection/or closure)- Conducts Day Nursery inspections- Conducts Personal Services Setting inspections- Completes food safety disclosure inspections (high, medium and low risk premises)- Responds to food related complaints as appropriate- Responds to reports of low-risk enteric diseases- Investigates and takes appropriate action in regard to tobacco, Municipal Code and Tobacco Control Act, in consultation with the appropriate inspector

**Key Qualifications**:

- Completion of or in the graduating year of the Bachelor of Applied Science, School of Occupational and Public Health, Ryerson University or a comparable degree in a program of instruction approved by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
- Eligibility to sit for the next scheduled CIPHI Board of Certification Examination.
- Possession of a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and access to a vehicle.

**You must also have**:
- Knowledge of all statutes and Municipal By-Laws respecting food, environmental health, communicable diseases and basic epidemiology.- Demonstrated ability to organize field work and exercise initiative and independent judgement. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good relations with the public and other staff.- Demonstrated ability to work in teams.- Good written and verbal/oral communication skills.
