The Contaminated Sites Officer is an experienced professional in the administration, investigation, and classification of contaminated sites in the province. The position provides essential administrative and technical support to Land Remediation Section professional staff especially the Site Risk Classification Unit, including the development and implementation of key administrative and technical guidance related to contaminated sites regulatory requirements and is responsible for screening, classification, and reclassification of high-risk sites across both the private sector and on crown land. The compliance and inspection work of the Contaminated Sites Officer is integral and essential to effective environmental land management within the province. The position also requires skills and expertise related to the technical review and evaluation of contaminated site investigations/characterization, remediation plans, and supporting waste discharge authorizations and site inspections.

The Site Risk Classification Officer/Site Identification Officer, Environmental Emergencies and Land Remediation Branch (EELRB), reports to the Section Head, Risk Classification, is responsible for screening, classification, and reclassification of high-risk sites across both the private sector and on crown land. This position requires significant project management skills overseeing and tracking as part of a team the intake of approximately 250 projects per year and oversight of specialized environmental consultants. Strong knowledge of contaminated sites is required including environmental protection legislation, investigative and remedial technology, and impacts of contamination on human health and the environment. The position acts as a support to Site Risk Classification Officers with the interpretation of complex scientific information that directly affects decision making and supports on-staff statutory decision makers (SDMs) respecting risk classification, compliance, and regulatory actions. This work is sensitive and complex due to the potential implications for responsible parties and the scientific, social, legal, political, and monetary factors that must be considered.

**Job Requirements**:
Education and Experience:

- Master's degree in science or applied science preferably in geosciences, agrology, engineering, environmental sciences, or biological sciences with one (1) year of related experience*; OR,
- University Degree in Science or applied science preferably in geosciences, agrology, engineering, environmental sciences, or biological sciences with two (2) years of related experience*; OR
- Diploma of Technology preferably in applied science with three (3) years of related experience*; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

*Related experience must include:

- Experience working in contaminated sites investigation, remediation, or management.
- Experience providing advice, both written and verbal, to supervisors, management, clients, and the public.
- A post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline as described above.
- A minimum or two (2) or more years of related experience working in contaminated site investigation, remediation, or management.
- Experience managing technically challenging projects.
- Experience in consultation and stakeholder engagement.

Willingness Statements
- This position requires you to have a valid FULL BC driver’s license (minimum class 5), or equivalent class driver’s license from another province or jurisdiction.
- Willingness to travel.
