Job Summary

To provide technical support in the teaching laboratories for the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program laboratory courses, including but not limited to NSCI 300; maintain and prepare lab spaces, equipment and chemical materials.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Program Director, and will take direction from the course instructor(s) for NSCI courses, including but not limited to NSCI 300.

The work will be performed in a wet lab setting and will support students working in this setting.

Work Performed
- Technical support for NSCI 300 and other NSCI courses, as required.
- Maintains research equipment in the lab; ensures it is kept is good condition and stored safely
- Prior to each lab session, preparing the lab stations with equipment, solutions and materials
- Prepares model organisms, media, reagents, stains, buffers etc. and for the academic sessions and the specific teaching labs within.
- Dispenses and aliquots reagents and supplies.
- Sets up electrophysiological recording equipment for each lab
- Cleans the lab after each class; cleans and prepares all equipment in the teaching labs in preparation for the next session.
- Collects used glassware, biohazard wastes from the NSCI teaching lab; sorts and loads collected glassware in the autoclave for cleaning.
- Sterilizes, scrubs & rinses glassware, loads racks for the autoclave and runs the autoclave and transfers the completed autoclaved materials to the dryer.
- Inventories and orders chemical supplies, consumables and other lab acquisitions.
- Picks up any biohazard loads & autoclaves them for decontamination.
- Performs other related duties as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in judgment or poor decisions could have extensive effects, including the loss of laboratory time, loss of teaching time and, damage to lab equipment. Moreover, improper handling of equipment or materials could represent a safety hazard to students or others.

Supervision Received

Employee receives detailed work direction from NSCI course instructor(s) on new processes or course experiments but otherwise works under general supervision in carrying out routine activities.

Supervision Given

Provides technical assistance and support to students in lab courses.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

BSc (preferred), in Neuroscience or a related life science field.

Experience in a laboratory setting preferred. Chemical & biohazard safety procedure knowledge preferred.

Proven ability to learn new techniques is necessary. Good practical laboratory skills. Position requires effective oral and written communication, interpersonal and organization skills. Ability to work independently. Able to exercise good judgment. Accuracy, care and attention to detail.
