Freelance Journalist

Consumers Council of Canada is an independent, not-for-profit federal corporation that has worked towards an improved marketplace for consumers in Canada since 1994.
The Council is an active electronic publisher. It publishes Think Consumers, an e-periodical serving the consumer protection and empowerment professional community, Consumers Council of Canada News, an Apple News channel, and its news blog. It is also an online publisher of research reports, educational materials and consumer policy recommendations. Its ambitions also include audio, video and multimedia content.
- The Council is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, versatile freelance journalist to prepare and produce timely, accurate reports for distribution through its online platforms.
- **Responsibilities**
- Partner with other journalists, editors, producers as necessary
- Covering news and/or features, as assigned, with some depth and analysis
- Eliciting newsworthy comments and information from interviewees
- Gathering, corroborating and interpreting data
- Researching information online and from other relevant news sources
- Follow developments in our areas of coverage to pitch relevant reporting ideas
- Retaining awareness of the readers’ needs for the different audiences our products serve
- Using digital equipment to deliver on deadline clean, clear, accurate, creative and quality content suited to our online platforms
- Maintain notes and recordings
- Suggest content-related art and prepare data tables as necessary

- Freelance, self-employed, work from home.

**Qualifications**
- Experienced journalist (at least two years full
- time experience in a media company preferred).
- Flexible in working with information technology tools.
- Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social factors in Canada, in particular, but also awareness of global impacts on consumer protection and empowerment.
- Required language skills: Highly proficient in English. Competency to write, edit and speak French is valued.

- High-speed internet access.Reasonably current computer hardware, Apple preferred.
- Willingness to use cloud-based services over the internet, such as iCloud services, GoToMeeting, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, DropBox, Zotero, Loomio.
