Selkirk Home Hardware Building Centre is looking for a professional and accountable Picker to work in our lumberyard. The Picker is responsible for preparing lumber and materials to fulfill orders for pick-up and delivery. They also help to maintain the yard, its merchandise, and customer needs as they arise.

**JOB DESCRIPTION**:
The Picker spends most of their day preparing orders for pick-up and delivery in the lumber yard. This includes reading orders, gathering the required lumber and materials, and banding and packaging these materials to make them available for the customer. They must have a strong attention to detail to maintain order accuracy. The Picker also supports the maintenance of the lumber yard and helps to serve customers. They load, unload, and store materials using a variety of equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, lumber carts, and banding machines. The Picker must be a team player and conduct themselves in a professional manner while performing all tasks with sufficient spend and accuracy to support store efficiency and a high level of customer service.

**HOURS**:

- Monday to Friday, every second Saturday
- Shifts: 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., 9:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M.

**TASKS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Work in a safe manner in accordance with provincial and federal safety legislation. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behaviour to management to have the situation corrected.
- Safely operate and maintain equipment including a forklift, lumber cart, pallet jack, banding machine, etc.
- Pick lumber and materials to fulfill orders with sufficient speed and accuracy.
- Assist the Shipper to prepare and organize orders for delivery.
- Bundle lumber using a banding machine.
- Load and unload materials.
- Assist customers in handling large or heavy items.
- Store material in the correct location in the yard.
- Keep the yard clean and the inventory neat and orderly.
- Be familiar with the locations of all inventory and equipment.
- Restock lumber bins, sheds, etc. when they are depleted.
- Check incoming merchandise against orders or invoices to identify damaged goods, shortages, and back orders.
- Assist customers with product information and direct them to the Lumber Desk for installations and other advice.
- Be aware of theft and act in line with company policy to report or discourage it.
- Help support new employees in training.
- Make suggestions for rule or policy changes when such changes would improve sales, profits, efficiency, morale, and/or operations in general.
- Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, management, and employees.
- Must be able to read and speak English
- Ability to read and comprehend written and printed materials, as well as information presented in numerical form.
- Must be able to work as part of a team
- Must be able to safely operate yard equipment and tools, including a forklift, pallet jack, lumber cart, banding machine, radial arm saw, etc.
- Previous forklift and/or lumber experience is considered an asset.

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS**:

- Must be able to lift, push, and pull materials weighing up to 100 pounds around the yard, placing materials on or removing them from trucks, pallets, etc.
- Must be able to stand and be on feet for extended periods of time throughout the day

**WORKING RELATIONSHIPS**:

- Reports directly to the Assistant Yard Manager and Yard Manager.
- Works closely with the yard's Shipper

Pay: From $15.80 per hour

Expected hours: 35 - 40 per week
