**PRIMARY FUNCTION**

Reporting to the Program Manager, Emergency Medicine, the Safety, Quality & Project (SQP) Coordinator will provide expertise in coordinating projects related to quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS). The incumbent will work collaboratively with the emergency department leadership team to develop and implement QIPS initiatives that improve operations, patient flow, and staff and patient safety in the emergency department.

This role will also conduct audits, quality improvement surveys, create tools / guides as needed and ensure that adherence to best practice is based on evidence including data and literature. The incumbent will help to seek out quality and safety gaps and innovative practices and review / analyze / synthesize data and literature as it relates to best practice for quality improvement and safety in the context of emergency department operations.

This position will be accountable to lead various quality improvement initiatives through the stages of conception, implementation, and ongoing monitoring for project sustainability. They will also support safety activities including: initial investigation and gathering facts related to patient safety incidents (SAFE Reporting) in consultation with PSQR; reporting findings to the emergency department leadership; participating in Critical Incident and Program Level reviews; active membership on department (e.g. the Quality and Patient Safety Committee) and corporate committees related to quality improvement and patient safety is required.

**RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE**:
**Quality Improvement**:
Provides support to KHSC Emergency Department quality improvement mandate by working with ED leadership in the identification, development and implementation of related projects.

Work collaboratively within the ED leadership team towards the goal of continuous quality improvement, using stakeholder engagement, literature review, value stream or process mapping, governance processes, and gap analysis.

**Patient Safety**:
Supports the culture of safety in the emergency department by participating, in consultation with PSQR, in the SAFE reporting and critical incident review process. As well as reporting findings /trends to the emergency department leadership and developing strategies to mitigate identified risk/safety concerns.

**Support day-to-day operations**:
Participate or coordinate in health and safety hazard assessments, critical case debriefing, safe practices reviews, etc. Monitor equipment to maintain in good working order, and is safe for patients and staff to use. Compile data needed for reviews and reports, and provide regular progress reports on project completion. Other duties and responsibilities as required.

**BASIC QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing; or equivalent combination of education and Emergency experience may be considered
- Formal education or certification in quality improvement methodologies and / or project management is an asset.
- 5+ years of experience in Emergency care, with project planning experience.
- Experiencing in analyzing and interpreting data.
- Triage Certified
- Ability to effectively manage time, prioritize work, multi-task across many assignments.
- Ability to assess the impact of new project requirements on an existing workload.
- Must possess strong project management skills as part of the ED team.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication & interpersonal skills
- Must understand the corporate business cycle of the organization.
- Must understand the project needs of an academic health care institution.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience in PDSA cycles.
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
