- May 6th - approx. Aug 9th, 2024 Temporary Full-Time Student Labourer

Successful applicants will provide a support function to staff in the Parks Department and gain valuable practical and professional experience.

**Typical duties will include**:

- Planting flowers, weeding, and watering flower beds, planters, and hanging baskets;
- Weed control on hardscapes;
- Trail maintenance and irrigation maintenance;
- String line trimming, brush clearing, and mowing;
- Irrigation maintenance;
- Litter pick up;
- Other general labourer duties as assigned.

**Required qualifications include**:

- A current student enrolled in the VIU Horticulture Program on a full-time basis in the current academic year, returning to full-time studies in the fall term;
- Grade 12, plus a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;
- Physical capability to safely complete continuous manual labour (e.g. bending, shoveling, lifting, pushing/pulling, etc.) in all weather conditions;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with the public;
- Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team as well as independently; and
- Ability to follow direction, especially direction related to safe work practices.

The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay is $20.09/hr ($20.49/hr effective July 1, 2024). Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week and shifts may include weekends and holidays.
