Sturgeon County is looking for a Temporary GIS Technician to join our team. Under the direction of the GIS Coordinator, the GIS Technician is responsible for creating maps and materials for presentation and supporting operational requirements of County departments. The main focus of this temporary position is to assist the GIS Team with the development and publication of a GIS data catalog. Tasks will include reviewing datasets to ensure minimum standards are met, documenting metadata, and the update schedules of datasets. Additional daily tasks will include helping end users troubleshoot issues, assisting with data sharing requests, or creating maps. This position also provides support services to the GIS Program such as data creation, conversion, entry, updates and other cartographic products.

Job Duties:
Provides mapping services to County Departments to achieve operational goals and objectives, and technical support to GIS users.
Utilizing the ESRI ArcGIS suite to fulfill requests from internal County Departments to prepare and update maps.
Preparing maps for inclusion in Council/Committee submissions and for newspaper advertising purposes.
Preparing and updating web and paper maps such emergency services maps, subdivision map books, Intranet subdivision maps and other publications as required by the organization
Meeting with stakeholders / needs etc.
Provides support to the Geographic Information Services area.
Assisting the GIS area staff with duties related to digital spatial data maintenance, data updates, geodatabase generation and data quality checking.
Downloading data to support digital data update cycles. Running scripts and models to update data once download is complete.
Creating technical documentation for projects, data generation, update, and validation responsibilities.
Creating and updating metadata as required.
Provides services to the public.
Being the first point of contact for the public within the GIS department.
Providing assistance and fulfilling requests from the public and business community for maps, air photos, orthophotography products and other materials housed in the GIS area
Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Job Skills:
Your competencies include:
Ability to create, update and maintain datasets within GIS systems. This includes importing and connecting with a variety of data systems.

Proficiency in producing professional cartographic and mapping products for various uses while adhering and contributing to corporate stye guides.

Ability to work well independently with mínimal supervision with the need for considerable concentration and time management to complete work with frequent interruptions and distractions.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate both technical and non-technical concepts to a variety of audiences.

High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a focus on Excel.

Demonstrated skill in developing and delivering technical training for all skill levels.

Ability to translate and manipulate data (i.e. GPS).
