**Job Description**:
**JOB SUMMARY**: UNDER THE GENERAL AUTHORITY AND THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE DEAN OF INDIGENOUS EDUCATION, THE INDIGENOUS STUDENT ADVISOR WILL PROVIDE SERVICES TO PROMOTE THE TRANSITION, RETENTION, ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND INCLUSION OF FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND INUIT STUDENTS.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Responsible for the ongoing day-to-day operation of the Indigenous Students Resource Centre,
and act as liaison between government agencies, band councils, Indigenous school boards and institutions, and John Abbott College.
- Plan, develop, implement and evaluate the services and programs offered.
- Write funding proposals and reports.
- Manage the budget.
- Provide orientation information to the students including procedures and processes
- Develop and oversee educational, cultural, social and entertainment programs and activities for Indigenous students on campus
- Collaborate with Student Services and attend bi weekly Student Services Chairperson meetings to highlight activities in ISRC
- Liaise with JAC teachers, Student Services, Admissions, Registrar's Office, Library and other College Services as required.
- Advocate for First Nations and Inuit within the College
- Participate in, assist, plan, and/or otherwise support College activities such as Multicultural Week, Orange Shirt Day, Red Dress Event and Moose Hide campaign
- Develop ways to increase visibility of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures within the College
- Work with College staff and administration to increase sensitivity to unique needs and realities of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students and communities.
- Coordinate with the Dean of Indigenous Education to ensure participation by most relevant representative in college committees such as ReconciliAction, Crossroads program, Indigenous Education Protocol committees
- In conjunction with the Dean of Indigenous Education, maintain contact with sponsoring school boards.
- Develop and strengthen links with Indigenous communities, external organizations and consultants.
- Represent John Abbott College to external committees and organizations.
- Provide psychosocial (mental, emotional, social, and spiritual) support to the students, make referrals to appropriate resources
- Provide academic support
- Assess individual student needs.
- Liaise with teachers to support Indigenous students
- Organize a variety of workshops such as study skills, parenting skills, budgeting and cultural safety.
- Organize peer and teacher tutoring
- Organize social and group building activities
- Host and participate in the planning of orientation sessions for potential new students
- Participate in job and career fairs.
- Maintain statistics and track students’ progress.
- Perform other related tasks as may be assigned.

**EDUCATION**:
Undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline
Master’s degree in Education or related field of study an asset.

**SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS**:

- Direct experience working with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students and communities
- Knowledge of one of the Indigenous languages spoken in Quebec a definite asset
- Thorough knowledge of Indigenous ways of teaching and learning, as well as an understanding of the impacts of inter-generational trauma and lived realities a definite asset
- Awareness of the specific cultural realities of Quebec Indigenous peoples and nations a definite asset
- Excellent human relations, organizational and administrative skills
- Strong English communication skills (oral & written)
- French language skills an asset
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel); in-house training will be available as needed
