Under the direct supervision of the PPE Repair and Maintenance Technician - Lead Hand, the PPE Repair and Maintenance Technicians monitor and track all department personnel issued turn-out gear and other related gear, to determine the need for repairs and cleaning. This includes inspection of all departmental turn-out gear and document condition in the Departmental Tracking System. The PPE Repair and Maintenance Technicians are responsible for the ordering of materials (and/or listing materials for order), repairs of turn-out gear and the repair equipment as well as maintaining and updating the inventory list. Technicians are responsible for the pick-up and cleaning of soiled turnout gear and the distribution of clean gear to operations personnel.

The PPE Repair and Maintenance Technicians must be knowledgeable of NFPA standards for cleaning and maintaining gear, turn-out gear, repair equipment and têxtiles/fabrics used in the manufacturing of the gear itself. This position shall have the ability and willingness to attain as well as continually maintain certifications pertinent to this position. These Technicians will be responsible for specified repairs to various pieces of gear as required, in addition to possessing the ability to operate all machines and equipment deemed necessary for this position. They will also be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of all related machines and equipment in the branch.

The position will be scheduled in line with the Shift Calendar followed by Operations Personnel in Fire Suppression.

**As the **_PPE Repair and Maintenance Technician, _**you will**:

- Repair and maintain turn-out gear.
- Repair any tears, replace velcro, sewing - replace damaged grommets, snaps, hooks.
- Inspect gear for damage and expiry date as per NFPA 1851.
- Replace worn-out parts of the turn-out gear.
- Make required alterations to the turn-out gear as per employee need.
- Determine if turn-out gear has to be sent out for extensive repairs that cannot be completed in our own Division.
- Tag and bag as well as maintain a tracking system of gear to be distributed by Logistics.
- Repair to miscellaneous equipment (i.e. bags, tarps etc).
- Sewing various sizes and types of bags.
- Ensure all turn-out gear is properly cleaned and maintain the departmental tracking system.
- Ensure proper cleaning procedures are followed in accordance with NFPA 1851.
- Identify areas of concern to be sent out to ISP in accordance with any current City of Winnipeg Vendors and/or Contracts.
- Picks up soiled turnout gear and distribute clean turnout gear to operations,
- Cleans, dries and places gear back into inventory,
- Maintain and provide data entry support on the Departmental Inventory Tracking System and any other PPE related databases need to be maintained by the Branch.
- Ensure all other contaminated equipment (i.e. blankets, clothing, medical bags, etc.) are cleaned in accordance with established standards and safety practices.
- Evaluate any new cleaning products that are needed to be utilized.
- Condemn gear beyond repair and if more than 10 years old or donate to “Firefighters Without Borders Canada” as per the current agreement.
- Maintain an inventory of materials required for repairs or turn-out gear and sewing room equipment.
- Prepare proper purchase orders for the purchase of required supplies.
- When and where required and capable to do so, to troubleshoot computer programs/software and sewing machines. When necessary, required to call appropriate service people/providers.
- Evaluate new repair materials.
- Outfitting Operations personnel who need PPE or related gear.
- Identify Operations Personnel through on-site inspections who require PPE gear or related gear. (i.e. Gear is near expiry, not NFPA compliant, etc.)
- Prioritize the order in which Operations Personnel who are in need of gear will receive it.
- Develop and maintain a list of personnel who have gear that is nearing expiry.
- Keep a working inventory of all PPE gear and provide inspections where required.
- May be required to personally visit with Operations Personnel on-site to inspect gear.
- Outfit new recruits with their required turn-out gear.
- Fit and supply gear for various “special education” or other projects where necessary.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as required.

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- A certification in specialized training and certification regarding repair of turn-out gear as well as other related gear is considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of knowledge and experience with mechanical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of the position would be considered.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Full Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent).
