EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY - Justice Navigator

Full-time / 2 Year Contract / 35 hours per week / $24.00 per hour

POSITION TITLE: Justice Navigator

PROGRAM: Ongoing Support Services

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To promote service users’ access to justice system services by reducing barriers through direct support and advocacy

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Provide information and assistance to service users charged with criminal offences to assist them in their participation in the criminal justice system process and make appropriate referrals as required
- Act as an advocate, connect with, and build rapport with service users navigating the justice system
- Support service users through the court process, accessing legal representation, bail procedures, trials and sentencing hearings - attend court with service users as needed
- Assist service users’ post-conviction/sentence for reintegration and support purposes
- Explain documents, forms, directions or conditions imposed by the courts
- Instruct service users on court procedures and virtual processes
- Establish and maintain working relationships with community agencies and stakeholders including social service agencies, crown attorneys, duty counsel, court staff, police and others
- Make referrals on an individualized basis to address the service users’ specific needs
- Improve communication by acting as a link between service users, supports and the justice system
- Maintain accurate confidential records, files, statistics and reports

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

- Degree/diploma in a relevant field (i.e., social work, social service worker, law and justice, criminology, criminal justice)
- Advanced oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Bilingualism considered an asset (French/English)
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
- CPIC Clearance
- NVCI, CPR and First Aid, ASIST certification
- Experience working within the criminal justice system
- Knowledge of criminal law process
- Advocacy and case management experience
- Strong organization and time-management skills
- Vehicle required along with proper insurance coverage and G License
