**Organizational Summary**

**Percy Walkus Enhancement Facility Summary**

The Percy Walkus Salmon Enhancement Facility is located in Rivers Inlet, Oweekeno (Wuikinuxv) Village. This privately funded and DFO approved salmon enhancement facility was completed in August of 2016. The management objective is to utilize salmon enhancement and critical stock assessment to achieve goals of sustainability, recovery, and the rebuilding of identified priority stocks in Rivers Inlet.

**Position Overview**

The Percy Walkus Hatchery Assistant Manager (HAM) helps assist in managing the day-to-day functioning of the Percy Walkus Hatchery and provides support to the Hatchery Management Committee as needed. The HAM interacts and collaborates with PSF’s external network of partners including government, the conservation community, First Nations, and others to implement and deliver PSF projects. The successful HAM will have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork which is both exciting and rewarding. They will work with the Wannock Chinook which are some of the largest fish in Canada

The position is camp based, and located in a remote area of BC, and will require flexible shifts of approximately 2-3 weeks at a time; depending on the time of year and production levels. Travel to and from the hatchery, accommodation and food expenses are covered by the employer.

**Roles and Responsibilities**

The HAM undertakes a strategic, technical, and administrative role at the Percy Walkus Hatchery. Key responsibilities include:

- Assisting in managing the overall operation of a Pacific salmon hatchery.
- Assistance in coordinating brood stock collections, adult holding, egg takes, incubation, rearing, marking and release (current hatchery production goals = 400k Chinook smolts (3 stocks), 100k Chum fry.
- Calculating and coordinating food requirements and setting up feeding regimes.
- Monitoring the environment and maintaining the optimal conditions for fish health as per standard BMP’s.
- Operating and maintaining physical and scientific equipment related to hatchery operations.
- Collecting and recording growth and production data.
- Overseeing, training and/or arranging training for fish hatchery support workers and supervising volunteers.
- Developing and managing budgets and maintaining financial records.
- Maintaining PAR Licensing recordkeeping and submission.
- Designing and building fish holding pens (or arrange construction of), floating stations and other hatchery equipment.
- Ensuring adequate maintenance of facilities, infrastructure, and operating equipment.
- Other duties as required.

**Reporting and Supervision**

Supervised by the Hatchery Manager, the HAM is responsible for undertaking all work identified by the Hatchery Manager and meeting or exceeding the standard of care set by them.

**Qualifications**
- A degree/diploma in aquaculture, biology, or a related field, or 1-2 years’ experience managing aquaculture, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a not-for-profit team environment is an asset.
- Must be able to handle physically demanding work (heavy lifting, netting, and bucketing fish for transport, field work, etc.). working in and around swift water for adult broodstock capture and other programs working in a remote setting.
- Possession of a valid BC Driver’s License; valid P.A.L. - Possession Acquisition License for firearms; Radio operators’ license; Small Craft Operators License; Level 1 first aid and transportation endorsement; working in and around Swiftwater Technical certificate; Pleasure Craft Operators Card an asset.

**Compensation**

The compensation for this role is $60,000 - $65,000 annually.
