Planetary is collaborating with an array of world-leading ocean scientists (including biogeochemical modellers) to develop and scale ongoing OAE projects across the globe, while also evaluating and initiating projects at new sites. Given this exciting time of growth and momentum towards OAE, Planetary is seeking a Head of Ocean Modelling to advance the state of the art through the development of an OAE modelling toolkit integrating physical oceanography and biogeochemistry, alongside mineral particle tracking and dissolution.

In this role, you will advocate, contribute, and develop leadership in the OAE community as it relates to ocean modelling for safe and effective carbon removal. You will work with the team at Planetary to support project site selection; help validate our MRV protocol; and bring your first hand experience in ocean modelling to accelerate and grow our capacity to remove CO2. These efforts will increase levels of confidence and care both within Planetary, in the broader OAE community, and with other stakeholders.

**Core Responsibilities**
- Build and scale a team that brings innovation to Planetary, and to the greater OAE community, in order to - Develop and refine an OAE modelling toolkit that can be cost effectively applied to assess CO2 removal at project sites - working with internal teams (e.g. Operations, Science) and external teams (e.g. academic / research institutions) to ensure success.
- Design, develop, and execute regional coastal models for project sites, validated using ocean observations, including in-house project data.
- Develop modelling tools, guidelines, and procedures covering all project stages from site screening to long-term monitoring.
- Develop and deliver content effectively that is “at the right level” for targeted stakeholder communities.
- Work collaboratively with the community of ocean scientists;
- to continuously improve both the community’s and the company’s modelling capability, in order to minimise the uncertainty in removal volumes
- to envision and progress the development and deployment of measurement and monitoring systems that will be required to enable gigatonne scale global OAE CDR verification.

**About You**
- M.S. or Ph.D. in physical oceanography or first hand experience with ocean modelling and related field (e.g. geological oceanography)
- Have hands-on experience with coastal ocean modelling (e.g. building and/or running models using Delft3D, MIKE, NEMO, ROMS, FVCOM, etc.) as well as interpreting and analysing data to produce clear and concise synthesis reports
- A broad portfolio of skills, encompassing data assimilation, team building, and leadership
- Experience with software programs that assess physical and/or chemical fluxes (e.g., CORMIX, CO2SYS, PHREEQC, etc.)
- Have experience measuring and modelling ocean inorganic carbon chemistry, and a good understanding of modelling coastal processes
- Prior coding experience (Fortran, Python, Matlab, etc.)
- Established community builder - strong communicator and consensus builder based on first hand experiences with ocean modelling and carbon removal - ability also to learn with and from others in the academic and OAE community while influencing and maintaining leadership in the space
- Have an optimistic, persistent and driven working style, pride yourself on responsiveness and are excited about contributing to collective successes
- Always looking to learn new things, curious about climate change mitigation technologies, and passionate about ocean CDR and the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) challenges
- A self-directed learner, early adopter, and excited about influencing the state of the art in relation to ocean modelling, ocean-based CDR, and OAE.
