**1‑Full Time‑ Registered Practical Nurse**
**Forensic Secure Inpatient Unit**
This position will involve working the Day, Night, Weekend and Extended shifts. The shift is not to be interpreted as a
guarantee.
Reporting to the Manager Forensic Mental Health, the Registered Practical Nurse will be responsible for providing
quality nursing care to complex patient populations whose outcomes are not predictable. As part of a multidisciplinary
health care team, the Forensic Registered Practical Nurse will practice within the Standards of the College of Nurses
of Ontario, the Philosophy of patient and family centered care, mission vision, values and the policies of Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. The Registered Practical Nurse is responsible for providing specialized care,
treatment and management of patients thought to have a mental disorder and involved with the Criminal Justice
System.
Applicants must have the following qualifications:
- Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current certification in BCLS
- Recent knowledge in Forensic Mental Health Nursing with experience caring for patients with addictions, mental
status examinations, trauma informed care and developing, leading and evaluating patients groups
- Knowledge of current legislation related to Forensic Mental Health, including the Criminal Code of Canada Part
XX.1 ‑ Mental Disorder, the Mental Health Act, and the Health Care Consent Act
- Ability to use the Nursing Process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation) in conjunction with her/his
basic and ongoing knowledge to arrive at individualized care planning and delivery
- Consults with Registered Nurse's when patients assigned to the RPN become unstable or have outcomes that are
not as expected
- Identify and recognize abnormal or unexpected patient responses and take appropriate action
- Ability to simultaneously manage multiple nursing interventions
- Strong interprofessional and communication skills
In addition to the above qualifications, preference will be given to applicants who:
- Have a certification, or recent continuing education in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing
- Current Certified Psychosocial Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP)
- Knowledge of the principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation or a similar recovery‑based model of care
Salary Range: $35.041 to 35.970
