**Position Summary**:
For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia’s leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.

The main objective of the STEAM Summer Camp Inclusion Facilitator is to work with the camp team to co-develop and deliver hands-on STEAM activities for camp participants (ages 5-12) of varied abilities and build inclusive programming so that individuals with intellectual and developmental needs grow their participation in the camp experience. The incumbent will identify ways the Centre can enhance its supportive and respectful environment for all camp attendees and directly support the inclusion of children with disabilities.

The youth will benefit from the opportunity to work in a changing and dynamic science-themed camp setting, providing significant opportunity to improve upon their communication skills, organizational skills, knowledge of science, knowledge of educational practices, and ability to work with children. The individual will gain time management skills, experience working in a team setting, confidence teaching and delivering educational programs, and supervisory skills for youth.

**Description of Tasks**:
The Inclusion Facilitator works in the Science Education department and reports to the Manager of Science Education and the STEAM Summer Camp Leader. The primary tasks of the position are:

- Developing and delivering meaningful science education and recreation experiences appropriate for children with disabilities
- Supervising campers while taking responsibility for their safety and enjoyment
- Supporting inclusion in the summer camp activities and assisting in providing guidance to campers, camp counsellors, and youth volunteers
- Providing direct support of campers with disabilities in 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 ratios depending on individual needs
- Maintaining a clean and safe work area
- Tracking camp weeks in daily journal of activities

**Qualifications**:
Education: Post-secondary studies in science, education, recreation, or a related discipline

Experience: Experience in child supervision, preferably in an educational, recreational, museum or camp setting; experience facilitating inclusion in a previous setting; experience in preparing and presenting workshops an asset

Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required; additional languages (especially French) considered an asset

Competencies:

- Works well as part of a team

Other Qualifications:

- Must pass a criminal record check or vulnerable sector check
- First Aid and WHMIS certification an asset

Eligibility: Applicants must qualify for Canada Summer Jobs in order to be considered. A full commitment to the employment dates is also required (June 4-August 26, 2024).

**Measurable Outcomes**:
The Inclusion Facilitator will:

- Successfully collaborate with the Camp Leader and Camp Counsellors in the development, planning, rehearsal, and delivery of workshops, field trips, games, and activities for children with disabilities
- Gain confidence teaching and delivering inclusive educational programs to children, and improve their knowledge of developing inclusion programs
- Provide direction and training for staff members on the inclusion needs of individuals participating in the camps
- Provide a safe and positive experience for all campers, using feedback from campers and their guardians to measure success and make improvements
- Make recommendations for future inclusive camp activities based on daily journals of events
