Under the general direction of the Principal, and with the supervision of the classroom teacher, the Educational Assistant—(Intervenor) Visual/Auditory Support provides assistance and support to audio/visually challenged students in a special facility (i.e. Resource Room) and/or an integrated setting, and who may be medically complex. The Educational Assistant—(Intervenor) Visual/Auditory Support provides the student with information they cannot gather on their own because of limited access to visual and auditory information, assisting with the appropriate social, motor, language and living skills for independence.
The overall goal of this position is to aid audio and visually challenged students in achieving their IEP goals and encourage their personal level of independence in a professional and courteous manner. By being their “eyes and ears” they provide the student with information using various modes (e.g.: touch, proprioception, taste, smell, etc.), enabling the student to understand the world around them so they may interact and respond appropriately.
The job involves maintaining confidentiality in all matters of the school district and current, proficient knowledge of the documentation practices, detailed procedures, School District Policies and Ministry of Education Legislation.
**SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES**:
**Ensuring students’ safety and wellness by**: assisting with the administration of student medication as indicated on medical forms, under the teachers’ supervision, as required; ensuring adherence to medical routines and/or special diets; implementing gross motor exercises; and assisting in the development and implementation of student health care and safety plans.
Ensuring the proper functioning and operation of various specialized equipment (e.g.: power wheelchairs, lifts, FM auditory equipment), and ensuring that emergency equipment is present and functional.
Performing specialized health procedures such as tracheostomy care, ventilator care, suctioning, catheterization, or tube feeding under written instructions from the student’s physician or Nursing Support Services (NSS).
**Assisting with students’ socialization by**: implementing and monitoring behaviour management programs, including observation, data-keeping and follow-up; following students’ customized behaviour modification programs, reporting on progress and discussing modifications with the teacher; and working with students to reinforce the proper behaviours for social interaction.
Accompanying students on field trips and facilitating Life Skills classes to instill basic skills such as using public transportation, cooking and laundry, grocery shopping, and road safety.
**Providing academic support by**: assisting students in the completion of prescribed academic, recreation, arts and crafts programs; reinforcing previously taught concepts; promoting personal independence in self-care (e.g.: feeding, dressing, toileting, mobility) and the development of gross motor skills; accompanying some students to integrated classes; observing students’ progress, maintaining appropriate records, and discussing with the teacher possible program changes to facilitate student learning; and participating in reviews of the student’s progress with the teacher and other parties (parents, vision and hearing consultant, vision and hearing teacher, psychologists, therapists, registered nurse) as directed.
Ensuring the safe and orderly storage of equipment and supplies.
Participating in staff meetings as requested and performing all such other duties as may be assigned by the Principal or designate.
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS**:
