Reporting to the Coordinator of Transportation, the Assistant Coordinator of Transportation assists in the planning, coordinating, and managing of all aspects of Transportation Services, both internal and contracted, for Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education (AVRCE).

Required Qualifications and Experience:

- Post secondary or specialized training in a field related to Transportation, Business Administration, IT Systems Technology, Engineering Technology, or an acceptable equivalent. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Five years management experience in a related setting, with considerable knowledge and understanding of all aspects of transportation management.
- Valid class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license.
- Successful completion of a supervisory or management skills course.
- Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, developing goals, and identifying measurable objectives.
- Working knowledge of provincial, municipal and vehicle regulations and codes.
- Working knowledge of WHMIS and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and General Safety Regulations.

Responsibilities and Abilities:

- The Assistant Coordinator of Transportation responsibilities and abilities include:

- Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external contacts.
- Monitoring and ensuring safe, effective and efficient delivery of transportation services that are compliant to governing regulations, provincial policies and AVRCE guidelines and practices.
- Liaising with key stakeholders including School Principals, parents/guardians, contracted services, Transportation and Regional Office staff, and Motor Carrier in investigating and resolving transportation matters.
- Overseeing delivery of contracted busing services including compliance to contract conditions.
- Monitoring staff performance and taking appropriate actions to establish performance expectations, and complete performance appraisals.
- Assisting the Coordinator of Transportation in the management of the Transportation budget including monitoring and forecasting of expenditures, submitting budget forecasts to Finance, and identifying and mitigating cost pressures.
- Being the primary user, system administrator and support person for the bus planning software used by AVRCE.
- Providing training to, and ensuring Transportation Supervisors, have an adequate level of system knowledge and ability.
- Ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Positive interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to develop teams and foster an environment which promotes collaboration and teamwork.
- Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others.
- Ability to positively resolve conflict situations.
- Understanding and awareness of cultural diversity.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to provide service and relationship to the public and the AVRCE in a professional, respectful, positive and courteous manner.
