Privacy Officer - Role description:
Reporting to the Chief Corporate Affairs and Legal Officer, Cogeco’s Privacy Officer is responsible for defining and leading the strategic approach to privacy and data protection for the whole organization. The Privacy Officer ensures that Cogeco’s privacy practices align with its strategic goals, regulatory requirements and industry standards. This role is critical in shaping the organization's privacy vision and strategy, driving a culture of data protection, mitigating risks, enhancing stakeholder trust and protecting the brand value as well as Cogeco’s reputation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish the governance required to ensure that the organization and its subsidiaries comply with applicable privacy and protection of personal information requirements and best practices- Build the enterprise-wide data privacy program aligned with the enterprise data strategy, operationalize compliance efforts and establish the necessary roadmap- Provide practical, timely, strategic and high-quality advice on best practices and compliance with federal, provincial and state privacy and data protection laws, as well as oversee legal and regulatory aspects of data collection, use, disclosures and transparency- Guide the continuous evolution of privacy methodologies and the enterprise tools that support them, including privacy risk assessments and incident and breach severity evaluations- Develop and maintain effective reporting mechanisms and metrics to provide executive leadership and the Board of Directors with accurate and timely insights into privacy compliance performance and effectiveness- Serve as the organization's central advisory resource regarding release of information and privacy governance related issues, including with law enforcement agencies- Provide leadership in the planning, design and evaluation of privacy impacting projects including in relation to emerging technologies, partnering with senior stakeholders across Cogeco; lead large-scale projects aimed at implementing the norms and standards imposed by applicable privacy legislation within the organization- Work with Governmental Affairs to develop relationships with regulators and other government officials responsible for privacy issues, and influence the evolution and implementation of privacy standards and requirements- Provide extensive legal support for the strategic reviewing, drafting, and/or negotiating of privacy and data protection terms in contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements- Advise on potential liability and other legal aspects related to data privacy and data security incidents and support Cogeco’s privacy and cybersecurity incident response programs, including supporting the investigation of potential incidents, identifying applicable legal obligations and supporting incident remediation efforts- Support the development and delivery of privacy training materials and other communications to increase employee understanding of Cogeco’s privacy standards, data handling practices and procedures and legal obligations- Represent Cogeco before regulatory/judicial authorities and other industry forums, and participate in public consultations on data protection and privacy issues
