Description

Cuthbert House is an Open custody/ Open Detention residential facility for male youth between the ages of 12-17, who are involved in the criminal justice system. Residential Workers' primary job is to provide supervision and maintain the safety the safety and security of the facility and everyone living in it. This position provides efficient, safe, and secure operation of an open custody facility through a high level of resident supervision and staff team support.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Program Supervision - Safety and Security

Actively supervise residents in the facility and in the community
Assume delegated responsibility for the facility when assigned
Complete duties, reports and logs as per shift description
Communicate and enforce facility rules while maintaining discipline and safety
Follow policies and procedures of Cuthbert House, The Salvation Army and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services
Observe, assess and document youths' behavior and ongoing progress in a factual manner
Deal with serious incidents and crisis in a safe and therapeutic manner
Escort youths in a lawful, safe and expedient manner as required
Challenge and address criminal conduct and thinking
Appear in court when necessary

Client Program & Services

Provide individual counseling
Deliver group programming when required
Assist clients to address their criminogenic issues
Deal with interpersonal relationships within Cuthbert House in a therapeutic manner
Support the Mission of The Salvation Army
Support clients in fulfilling their spiritual needs
Refer clients to outside resources and counseling when needed
Supervise delivery of medication
Assure residents are provided with appropriate medical attention

Sundry Duties - As required

Provide support and feedback to student placements
Complete Sundry duties for required housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility including training in Safe Food Handling and preparation

Perform other duties as required.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
These are relief positions with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required
Working environment is a residence with two levels and a basement, all accessible by stairs. Including an office setting with generally agreeable conditions
May encounter hostile clients
Occasional travel for meetings and appointments

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
A diploma in Social Science, Corrections, childcare or Social Work and related experience
Current First Aid and CPR Certification
Up to date Immunization
An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:
Knowledge of Youth Justice is considered an asset
One year experience in this field or related field

**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:
Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
