Principle clients include: Ministry of Forests, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, other government agencies, and all of the major universities in the Province.

This is a multi-faceted Analytical Chemist position. Duties and responsibilities include: conducting complex sample preparation procedures; working independently to develop, implement, conduct and report routine and non-routine chemical and biochemical analytical procedures; working, with limited direction, to prioritize and schedule tasks and projects to meet deadlines; when required, acts as Unit Head and quality control co-ordinator for agronomic and environmental inorganic analyses; and, is the principal backup to the Special Applications Chemist and Soils Analyst positions. You will also lead small teams of junior staff to undertake and complete complex projects requiring a focussed team effort.

**Job Requirements**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, or related field, plus three (3) years of related experience; OR,
- Master’s Degree in Chemistry, or related field plus one (1) year of related experience.

Related Experience must include all of the following:

- Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical chemistry instrumentation, such as: ICPOES, ICPMS, UV-Vis, GCFID/GCMS, HPLC/LCMS; as well as the corresponding sample extractions.
- Experience assisting in continuous improvement, development, delivering, and training staff for laboratory procedures, such as: standard operating procedures (SOP), following ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories) standard, etc.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment following and improving quality control, quality assurance (QC/QA) programs, including meeting data quality objectives, validation, documentation of non-conformances and their resolution and ensuring the reported data produced meets quality assurance standards.
- Experience manipulating or creating or maintaining large volumes of laboratory records, compiles data from instruments and enter data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Experience working in a potentially hazardous chemical laboratory environment, including following safety procedures and applicable health and safety regulations (e.g. WHMIS, TDG and First Aid).
- Experience identifying and/or recognizing possible origins of sample contamination, deterioration and other systemic sources of error and develops controls. Resolves contamination issues, documents the investigation and updates the SOP.
- Experience in prioritizing and organizing a complex workload while remaining focused on client needs in a busy and constantly changing environment.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

- Five (5) or more years of experience with inorganic and organic analysis using modern ICP, HPLC, GC/MS and other analytical instrumentation and extraction techniques.
- Experience supervising or managing a staff of technicians, co-ops or support staff in a laboratory setting.
- Experience developing or participating in proficiency testing programs and/or other laboratory collaborative opportunities to verify the precision and validity of results to uphold the laboratory’s credibility and reliability.
- Experience repairing high-performance sophisticated instrumentation; troubleshoots malfunctions, and performs delicate repairs requiring extreme care and attention to detail.
- Experience with the operation and maintenance of the laboratory’s computerized and electronic infrastructure (workstation hardware, software, operating systems, instrument interfaces and local instrument networks); collaborates with IT/IS specialists to install and configure equipment, workstation hardware and software, ensure that data is regularly backed up into the LIMS, and participate in troubleshooting and systems repair and updates.
- Experience in independently adapting, modifying, customizing, documenting and conducting complex chemical analysis procedures.
