The Markham YMCA Centre is one of eleven full service health and fitness centres in the Greater Toronto Area that provides a variety of health, fitness, recreation and community programs to more than 8,000 members that represent the diversity of Toronto and its communities.

The Assistant Maintenance Worker works closely with the Facility Manager to ensure the buildings and landscape of the facility remain in good working order and are well-kept.

**In this role, you will**:

- Adhere to all YMCA of Greater Toronto Policies and to Priority SAM cleaning and maintenance standards; adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHIMIS safety procedures and guidelines.
- Provide hands on services in the maintenance and landscaping of the grounds, grass cutting, weeding, brush removal, etc. and the organic farm; cleaning, general repair, laundry, and security of the facility to maintain Association assets in as new and relevant condition. Support the work of other maintenance and housekeeping staff to ensure that day to day operational tasks are carried out.
- Complete preventative maintenance and repairs; repairs building equipment and responds to work orders; report any and all maintenance issues to the Facility Manager.
- Contact contractors as required to undertake repairs; supervision of contractors in the facility during the shift.
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; take a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represent the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
- Understand the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
- Understand the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

**You bring**:
**_ Canada Summer Jobs Criteria:_**
- Be between 16 to 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

**_Other Qualifications:_**
- 5 years’ related experience in skilled trades and/or general maintenance and equipment repairs an asset
- Understanding and demonstrated ability to work with lawn, landscaping and farm equipment, and operate small power tools
- Ability to work in an efficient manner independently and as part of a team
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
- Excellent written communication skills
- Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
- Valid Driver’s license and driver’s abstract
- Standard First Aid and CPR
- WHMIS and related health and safety training
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
