**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**

The R&D Formulation Chemist is responsible for all steps of formula development from ideation to final formulation of OTC, skin, hair, body, and color cosmetics. Primary responsibilities will be the innovation and formulation of new products, technology transfer, and scale-up support.

**DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES**

1. Develop new innovative marketable products, revise/reformulate existing formulas and break down/reverse engineer competitive products.
2. Responsible for all aspects of development from stability to full production scale-up.
3. Initiate, develop, and create innovative products to expand the R&D formulation library and enhance customer presentations.
4. Create, review, and approve production batch procedures
5. Monitor pilots and scale-up batch processes
6. Correspond with Customers and internal sales team to secure Customer approvals, prepare a master file, manufacturing procedures, and specification sheets.
7. Liaises with other departments, Customers and suppliers ensuring communication and the resolution of issues.
8. Special projects and independent research
9. Work with QC to help troubleshoot production batches.
10. Research of raw materials, vendor management, and stability testing/evaluation.
11. Manage the development of multiple products simultaneously
12. Formulate product prototypes and evaluate them for chemical and physical properties, performance, and stability.
13. Ability to work professionally with Customers on new development initiatives
14. Improve current formulations of products when needed.
15. Produces pre-production lab batches from formula cards, and colour samples provided by the Customer; calculating, weighing, mixing, and grinding ingredients.
16. Research product formulations and properties of raw materials.
17. Test Customer packaging for fill, compatibility, and weight loss.
18. Assist the Sales Team with new product presentations.
19. Prepare and provide samples to the laboratory for testing
20. Reports all off-spec results to R&D Manager; implements corrective action
21. Establish product specifications and procedures as required for R & D projects.
22. Support scale-ups from prototype to manufacturing and production
23. Assist Microbiologists workers with the research and development of new or existing preservative systems mentoring dept. co-workers in the process
24. Obtain data and information required for regulatory submissions.
25. Support technical services for operations and consumer relations.
26. Develop reports and documents detailing project processes, results, and conclusions.
27. Work with process engineers on “scale up” processes
28. Reformulating existing products in response to changes in regulations or availability of raw materials
29. Generate control specifications on new products and Customer formulations
30. Continuous improvement of technical skills by participating in vendor seminars

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education**:

- Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Chemistry or related field
- Post-grad in Cosmetic Sciences preferred

**Experience**:

- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in an R&D role in the Cosmetics industry

**Skills/Abilities**:

- Demonstrated formulation and innovation skills in OTC, skin, hair, body, and color cosmetics
- Exceptional creativity and resourcefulness
- Working knowledge of applicable analytical instruments
- Effectively perform in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment
- Ability to complete physical/chemical testing for cosmetic products
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing, quality, and product evaluation of cosmetics
- Ability to effectively colour match
- Highly organized; process and detail oriented
- Experience in a GMP regulated environment
- Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills; solution oriented
- Strong written and oral communication
- Highly motivated with a passion for the industry
